It's not a law to protect you, it's a law to protect the other guy, to make sure you can pay for any damage you cause. That's PLPD insurance is legal. Except that "you" are not paying for it. EVERYONE in the insurance pool is paying for "your" screwup/damage. That's simple dilution of personal responsibility. And it's STILL nothing more than Gambling.

Comparing purchasing auto insurance to buying lotto tickets is plum crazy.
Sheesh ! Maybe buying CD's or savings bonds could be considered gambling also with that rationale ....... "you are gambling that the bank or financial institution will still be around and if it works out you will be better off than sticking the cash in a shoe box."

Comparing purchasing auto insurance to buying lotto tickets is plum crazy. Is it? ALL insurance is, by definition, gambling on a negative outcome - that's the "payout" - the hope that someone other than you will have to pay for your problems whether it be to repair your car or your body. Calculate all the money you have spent on "insurance" some time. Then run a compounting calculation on it figuring "only" 4%. That was YOUR money that was just pi$$ed away if you aren't "fortunate" enough to get into an accident or get sick. That's why I have an HSA. MY money belongs to ME and gains interest until I choose to use it. I could have bought several cars - better than the ones I have owned - for the amount of money I've been FORCED to dump into the "insurance pool" to pay for other people's accidents and lawsuits. The only reason we can't have an HSA-like program for Auto Insurance is because the Auto Insurance Industry - that demanded the law making their over-priced product mandatory - would lose money. And the House NEVER wants to lose money. THat's why the Games are rigged.

Brilliant ! I see idiots in the convenience store where I get coffee in the AM spending $20 or more every day on lotto tickets. Sheesh ........ wonder why they can't get ahead?... 'Course, they could be getting their coffee at home and spending the ballance on Lottery Tickets... $20/da on Lotto is better than $20/day on Vodka... or Cigs (or McDonalds for that matter...). Everyone chooses their own poison. Me... I'm into Lead and Gunpowder. ;D I agree...if you're into gambling (and I'm not), knock yourself out. You're not hurting anyone but you. And about the auto insurance issue...I definitely see OI's points and agree; however, I for one know that I'd hate to be hit by an uninsured driver and be out of luck if auto insurance was not required by law (and yes, I know that many drivers will drive uninsured without regard for any law saying they need it, just like many criminals will possess and/or use weapons illegally even with legislation intended to "prevent" that in place). Even with legislation that mandates people to have auto insurance, I would guess many, many people get hit by uninsured drivers and never get as much money as is deserved as a result. In that way, I see the law as kind of pointless, although I'm not ready to say it should be thrown out. How criminal of an act is hitting someone without auto insurance and then not paying up?
