If you are just after killing a deer than it's a boring game. If on the other hand a sunrise in the woods makes your heart beat a bit faster than you understand. As to avail hunting lands, well I see far fewer people after deer season. I've hunted public lands on the weekend after deer season and not run into a soul. OK a question: How many here are willing to take on a prefect stranger and mentor him or her in hunting? Hey Tag, what are you hunting on the weekend after deer season?? I bet it is lonely out there hunting after season. ;D I'm sure that was a typo, but I couldn't resist. No typo, just not a clear statement. I hunt: Rabbit, Crow, Squirrel and Yotes. Point I was trying to make was that hunting need not be Deer centric; but if that is your thing that is OK also. For me it about spending time with my Son or spending time just along in the woods. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Woody and I probably have the same perspective on this issue. When we were growing up small game was the only game in town. During the late 50's and early 60's seeing a deer of any kind anywhere was a novelty. We all grew up hunting squirrels, rabbits, quail and the occaisional pheasant. Later in the 60's and early 70's we began to see grouse in huntable numbers. Now it seems there are so many deer that they are almost an epidemic in some places. Truly it is whatever gets your heart going that defines hunting for most of us. I've killed a fair number of deer over the years but nothing gets me as excited as having a good bird dog work the birds on a cool November day. I would add that deer hunting is NOT over-rated but trust me it is a lot easier to get a wild deer into the freezer in Indiana than it is to get a home grown grouse in the same freezer compartment. And trust me the kids will appreciate ANY kind of hunting... Jack Yes, we are. Not sure there was even a deer season at all when I started hunting in 1949. There certainly wasn't any deer in the old brickyards off Lodge Aveneue where I first started rabbit hunting. I got away from small game and got back into hunting deer in 1968. Deer were still few and far between then. Since I was into deer then that is what I taught and brought Woodmaster up on. I don't think I ever took rabbit, waterfowl or squirrel hunting. I took him a couple times with a friend just to run rabbit dogs and he seemed to enjoy that, but he was quite young then. I might be wrong, but I don't think he was ever bored with deer hutning. He now hunts harder than I do, so it must have took.

If deer hunting is taught properly it teaches the newby to learn much more from the ground up by observing deer's interactions & reactions to the flora & fauna in it's year around daily life. But as 870 stated, some folks just aren't cutout to do math long hand... I think videos are a good training tool when used in conjunction with many hours of OJT.

I started hunting in the same time johnc and Woody did. Alot of small game and no deer, the first deer license I bought was at the court house because that was the only place to get one. Then in the earlier 70's the pheasant and quail were wiped out in my area and to this day have never returned. It has been at least 30 years since I have seen a wild pheasant here and even longer for a quail. See a couple of rabbits a year certainly not enough to hunt. Only small game here is squirrels. Turkey finally mved in to the area 3 years ago, so it's deer , turkey or squirrels for our youth. Don't get me wrong I used to love bird and rabbit hunting but that is just not an option on the farm anymore!!!

All depends on what the youngin wants to cut their teeth on. I think squirrel hunting is a great start. I've had the good fortune to hunt all our IN game. Give me deer hunting alone and I would be happy, my passion.
