My buddy offered to take me on a hunt with him this last night, I jump at the chance to go i like new places to hunt he made it clear that this is a one time thing. no big deal. he explained to me he only had 2 stands on the property one for him and one for his boy and they only set 60 yds apart i told him to put me where he wanted to it his land and I'm the guest. we get set in the stand about an hour before sun up and we stayed all day (left about 810) in this day i saw more deer then i knew what to do with and i didn't shot any of them.they were any where for under neath me to 50 yds out. when we got to the truck my buddy looked at me and said me why i didn't take any of the deer. so i told him this: 1. if a doe don't dress 110 or better i don't shoot 2. if a bucks rack don't break over the ears i don't shoot 3. if and deer is running or trotting i don't shoot (it has to be walking or standing for me to shoot) 4. i don't shoot anything that not with in 30 yards(bow sight go to 40) My buddy told me i was nuts for thinking like this are my standards to high. I have killed a lot of deer in my time but i have let more deer walk by then i have ever shot. ARE MY STANDARDS TO HIGH ?

Just for the record,I would be interested to know how you can tell if a doe will dress 110# 0r 111#or 109#? Or how do you tell if a deer is exactly at 30 yards or 29 3/4 yards. They are your rules your choice, glad they are not mine.

I understand what you are saying..... I have a few of the same rules myself.... I do not care to take shots much past 30 yards (killed a buck last year at 32 yards) even though I have pins out to 40 yards.... I also don't shoot at trotting or running deer.... and I always try to stop them with a bleat if I am wanting to get a shot. As far as does.... if I know it is not a button buck..... I am gonna try and put it in my freezer.
Like was said earlier... they are your standards... so no one elses opinion of them should matter.... if you are taking deer and are happy with the deer you take.... then good for you.

I think each hunt brings its own set of standards for me.
What part of the season are we in,
where am I hunting,
public land or private land,
how far will I have to drag the deer,
am I hunting with a bow or gun
have I already killed a deer that season.

I most definitely will not shoot at a running or trotting deer and will try to get them to stop before I do. I also do not like to shoot much past 40 yds, but that is a confidence thing more than anything. I have a cousin who will shoot deer at 50 to 60 yds and he drills them every time and I have no problems with that (actually kind of jealous he is such a good shot).

My Standards for me and anyone that hunts with me are as follows, I practice QDM on my farms that I hunt, Only Mature Does taken, No Button Bucks, if a b.buck falls then that person is not allowed the rest of the season, (Makes them think about it before they pull the trigger) No Buck taken with less than 8pts and width breaks its ears.
Now these standards I live by, and talk about working and seeing the number of deer, I have seen on one little parcel in Delaware County 40 deer this year, Its unbelieveable this bow season is already in the books as my best for numbers.
They really been hitting the Bur Oak Acorns.

Do you own the properties? If not are these the landowners wishes?

Like others have said, they are your standards and you seem happy to live by them then more power to you and continue doing what you have been doing.

To each their own. At the end of the day, you only have to answer to yourself and the good Lord. Sounds like you had a great hunt.....congrats.

Not to tell you to change your standards..... but you might want to be careful because if you do not kill off the cull bucks then after a while they will be the ones doing the breeding.... just something to think about.

You paid 24 dollars for the tag. Shoot what you want to shoot. However, just make sure you thank your buddy for what seems like a HOT hunting property!!!

All deer look good in my freezer. Actually I do have limits, we only get 3 tags between me and my dad so we try to stay away from fawns and with bow everything is 30 yards and in.

Never second guess yourself,,your standards are part of your hunting ethics,,whethere they are too high or not doesn`t matter. Its the quality of the hunt not the quantity of the kills.
