I've got a feeling that the fact that Alaska is one of the the largest oil-producing states in the US also had an effect on her getting picked. If/when they get voted in, how long you suppose it'll be before ANWR gets the OK?

I think that had less to do with it than:
(A) She's everything McWhatshisname isn't. (Mostly) Conservative, Articulate, Hunter, pro-Gun, Young, Female, Good Looking, etc. (B) She DOES have Foreign Affairs experience: Alaska's Governors REGULARLY Treat wih Russia and Japan... And experience with Russia is a Good Thing right now. (C) She's NOT from a City/East/Left Coast. (D) She's got a Son going into Harm's Way.
That she is Alaskan/Pro ANWAR drilling is almost immaterial. In some ways, it could be a problem for drilling there to "lose" her - depending on who takes her place.

I'm not discounting any of that at all. Just adding to what has already been said.

Experience counts for very little if one has no common sense.
Obama scares the ,well lets just say he scares me.

The first thing I thought of was.........WOW.........McCain is 72 years old today, we have a 44 year old beauty queen a heartbeat away from being President of the USA. This lady was a sportscaster that won a seat on the city council 15 years ago, and she is in her FIRST TERM as govenor. I understand the temptation to go after the 18 million Clinton voters, but the fact she is a heartbeat away from a 72 year old President scares me worse than Obama She was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska two years ago and today she is the second best person in all of the republican party to be president of the United States? Give me a break. A senile old man for president and there will be a one term mayor of Wasilla with half a term of combination Governor/game warden/hocky mom just a stroke away from comander and chief of all the armed forces to face down Putin the ex- top man in the KGB and leader of Russia? Of course there's always the other choice, the green senator from Chicago who'd likely just join forces with the commies. This country is truely in the crapper. The deal is sealed, I'm voting Libertarian.

personally, I think if we want true change in our government, we need to get rid of some of the old "experience". wise man once said "sound common sense and thought will go along way until you can be brought up to speed." she bucked the system and good O boy network up there plus she has local knowlege and support to get more Alaskan oil. Short term solution until we can get other technologies up to speed. I think it was a marvelous decision on Mc Cains part. Plus I think she can match Obama's energy....McCain looks half dead.

I think everyone should read this detailed bio, and you may rethink some things that have been said... She got elected governor after going after one of her own, i.e. Murkowski, and other republicans for ethics violations in the state. On the one hand, good for her being ethical, but it wasn't about her qualifications... I was up there when this race was going on, and it was about big oil money and scandal with the two past gov incumbents, one a republican, the other a democrat... and Anchorage rules the state in terms of politics, with something like 45% or so of the population... folks were ready to clean house, and she was the alternative candidate, so don't make her being governor as more than it is... O.I. & Woody - with all due respect, Anchorage is about the size of Ft. Wayne population-wise, and physically seems like it's smaller than Kokomo, and Wasilla isn't a bedroom community of Anchorage... it's clear around the end of Turn Again arm and west of Palmer on route 3... like 40-50 miles from the big town and out in the woods (pop 5470 in 2000)... Being mayor there would be like being the mayor of Homer or Soldotna... like Tipton IN for hoosier comparison... So, she may be a real nice lady, and very ethical, but she ain't afraid to eat her own (there will be some long time republicans who will NOT vote for her per Murkowski and problem child Sen. Stevens - McCain may get more than he bargains for), and I frankly don't see being governor of Alaska for <= one term being equal to some of republicans from the lower 48 who are/were governors of more populous states, e.g. Mitt..., nor do I consider living east of the Bering Sea as foreign policy experience for someone who could well become the next commander-in-chief after McCain, should something happen... but hey, she was runner-up for Miss Alaska... mensnewsdaily.com/2008/08/29/alaska-governor-sarah-palin-backgrounder/Don't see nor can I find anything about her and fishing rights and Russians... why would a state governor have anything to do with international treaties? That's done by State Department and the Congress... only thing she would have jurisdiction over is the state boundary waters... Also, note that Pres George the First was part of a deal to give back Alaskan islands to the Russians back in the early 90's... greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=00374MSo, I think this is somebody's idea of a smart tactical move which may well blow up in McCain's face... Jack Ryan is going to love this... I'm a democrat and I don't like either choice... our primary system is totally screwed up and this election proves it...

This lady was a sportscaster that won a seat on the city council 15 years ago, and she is in her FIRST TERM as govenor. ... And yet, she has done more C level work than Obama J Biden & McChurian combined... AND has direct (noth just committee) Foreign Relations Experience as well. Alaska has been trying for 30 years to put together a pipeline deal through Canada to supply natural gas to the lower 48, and have blown it every time, but Governor Sarah Palin has got it done in short order. Read how hard nosed she was about jobs for Alaskans, the environment and use of in-state resources, think of the number of Americans this will put to work, the boon to our economy, a plentiful and stable supply of energy for the future. At an estimated cost of 30 billion dollars, it will be the largest construction project in U.S. history. To the liberal elitists who decry she has never accomplished nothing and think she will be a easy push over in this election cycle, I beg to differ, methinks if they choose to ride this tigress, they will find trying to dismount a very dangerous task indeed. Politically speaking, what has Obama, Biden, or that matter McCain, ever done economically for the nation that even comes close to this? Article was written before her pick as VP: "Energy: As congressional Democrats dither on a vote for oil drilling, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has pushed through a gas pipeline project to bring new supply and price relief to the lower 48." www.investors.com/editorial/editorialcontent.asp?secid=1501&status=article&id=303693123946167She is Obama's "Ginger Rogers". She can do everything he can, backwards, in a dress and high heels... and she's only the VP ticket.

As for "Troopergate" I'd have done the same thing. She fired the superior of a Scumbag because the superior wouldn't fire him. You have a Poaching, violent, drunken Cop and all they do is reduce him in grade? That is derilection of duty on the part of the commissioner of public safety. You bet firing Monegan was the right thing to do - whether Wootens was her BiL or not.

I agree with Jack on this one. The republican party is in sad shape...... Agreed - but NOT because of Palin... that is unless you believe that inbred corrupt big-government Beltway Politics is a Republican Party in "good shape"... Ms. Palin goes to Washington. Mr. Smith may have to set aside his status.

Guys and gals, She DOES have executive experience which is more than we can say for Obama or Biden. It is one thing to sit in the senate ( Illinois and the US of A) and quite another to run a state. Obama (if elected ) isn't a heart beat away . He is THERE and he has less experience than she does. LOL... nobody scares me worse than Obama.. I agree 100% Dave

Even though her husband is in the business, she's by no means "in bed" with "big oil". She doubled state taxes on oil companies doing business in Alaska and divvies up the booty by cutting each resident a yearly check (one reason she's wildly popular in the state except with the good 'ol boy network) She stopped an under the table deal to build a pipeline across the state sans any public input from state residents, and she ain't afraid of the big boys neither. She has a current lawsuit filed against......President Bush! It involves his signing of the polar bear onto the endangered species list. The lawsuit claims fraudulence related to putting a halt to oil exploration and drilling. Her kind of governance is exactly what this country needs IMO.
