Yep,, Pigeon made the trip over... Cost me half adays pay and $30 in gas,,, but a bud and I made it over there.. Wasnt sure what to expect,, as this is really outta my hands when it comes to dealing with suites and such.. I forgot my camera,, so my bud took these pics with his cell... First thing,, they passed around a sign-up sheet.. It asked for your Name,, Organization,, and E-mail... I looked it over real well,, and I'll tell you what I did see.. I saw St Joe river home owners association,, I saw government names,, and I saw a few NRA.. I did NOT see any Delta or DU or any of that on the list!!! I put Chris Mcdonald,, Indiana Sportsman,, and my email!! Right away when they went into the hunting part,, the room got real tense!! And they already had all the home-owner association guys lined up and ready... It was already planned for them.. First thing up was the guy that was involved in the Hunter Harrasment from a couple years ago.. He still tried to paint his story of how we are CRIMINALS with no respect for the law.. Terrozing poor old ladies and shooting nothing but tame ducks... THen he passed out pics and diagrams and such on how our BAZZOKA loads are capable of bringing down elephants at 285 yards.. He went on about how I was killing ducks over his dock,, and hitting his house and neighbors playgrounds and such... All the while he didnt realize who I was... Then another of his neighbors was up,, and he started in on the same thing.. How there is no way the ducks are even migrating in Oct,, that we are shooting tame ducks,,, that get soo close we should use a .22 On and On and On about some very off the wall stuff that doesnt even relate to waterfowl hunters.. The fisrt guy had his own pics,, which was what got him on the other side of this eqation.. He kept stating that there was no land between the house's,, that we were hunting off his dock.. Well,, then it was my turn to step up to the plate here.. I quickly had the entire panel back looking at his pics.. Sure enough he had a pic of my boat,, and the 3 empty lots between his house and his nieghbor.. Whick they all looked right back at him after this.. I explained how there was NO WAY to even shoot near his house,, as it was behind us.. Again they all looked right at him again.. I explained about me killing a NICE pair of widgeons on opening day which is in Oct.. Them birds were not tame!! I explained to them I killed a banded woody that was from New Jersey.. Tame from New jersey? Not migrating in Oct? I explained that we are not shooting BAZZOOKAS out there.. I told them they would all be surprised to go out and look at where this guys house sits and where we were hunting.. In my opinion,, I held up our end of the bargain real well.. I know that I am missing some of this,, and will probably add more too this story.. The Tribune reporter was there also,, so I am sure he will have another story in the next couple days also... In the end,, I dont think they are gonna get this to pass the way they have it right now... But they sure taint gonna give up.. And once again,, our biggest supporters are the DNR.. I cant remember this guys name,, but he is the head of the Law Enforcement side of the DNR... He was hands down the biggest help.. I took my pic with him a Rob Carter after the meeting was over..

Hunters target Fry rules DNR panel meets today on limiting waterfowl hunt along populated rivers. By ED RONCO Tribune Staff Writer In June, The Tribune wrote about laws that regulate hunting along the St. Joseph River from the perspective of an Elkhart County homeowner who was in favor of tighter restrictions. Read that story online at www.southbendtribune.com. In this story, hunters talk about possible changes to Indiana's hunting laws, and their opposition. — The editors State lawmakers will sit down today in Chesterton to consider whether hunting along the St. Joseph River should be more tightly controlled. And while nothing has been put into actual bill form yet, there are some reverse expectations at work: The measure's critics seem convinced it will become law, and its sponsor — who has introduced similar legislation before — is pretty certain this latest version will get squashed. The General Assembly's Natural Resources Study Committee meets at 1 p.m. CDT today inside the Nature Center at Indiana Dunes State Park to consider whether the issue of hunting along populated rivers is important enough to be considered by the General Assembly during its 2009 session. The park is located at 1600 N. 25 E. The proposed tightening of the hunting rules comes from state Rep. Craig Fry, who says he's responding to complaints from neighbors that their homes have been hit by birdshot from guns on the river. But two local men who hunt near where the complaints originated say they do so responsibly. "That stuff did not come out of our guns," said Randy Miller, an Elkhart taxidermist who regularly hunts duck along the St. Joseph River just west of County Road 17. "Those people do not want us out there." It would take a lot of effort for gunfire to reach across the river, he said. Most of the ammunition used to hunt ducks is made of steel and relatively lightweight, traveling only about 150 yards or so. "The kill zone on steel shot out of a 12-gauge on a duck, if you get a lucky pellet in the head, is 70 yards, tops," Miller said. The distance from the cattail blind he uses to one of the complaining homes is about 230 yards, he said. Measurements taken from mapping software back that up. "It's harder than all get out to kill a duck with steel," he said. "I'm not out there to hurt somebody. That's the last thing I want to see. I don't want to break a window. I don't want to suffer the consequences of a poor decision. I want to have some fun and go home." One of Miller's hunting friends, Osceola resident Ted Cox, said people who live along the river see it as an extension of their own backyard. "The folks who live along the river now, they perceive that that is their body of water, for their personal use," he said. "Some of the folks who are complaining about us hunting on the river are living in a subdivision called Hunter's Point." Or worse, said another hunter, South Bend resident Brent Burkus — they think of the wildlife as their pets. "They have a house there and they see these ducks flying around, and they're like their pets," Burkus said. "Season rolls around and they see their so-called pets get shot at, and they don't like it." Miller and Cox both say they think the General Assembly will turn the issue into a law that would greatly restrict their ability to hunt nearby. "Randy and I, we try to hunt as often as our budgets permit," Cox said. "Realistically, we can't travel 40, 50, 60 miles each way every time we have the opportunity to go hunting." 'A war zone' State Rep. Fry, D-Mishawaka, lives about a block from the river and can hear the gunshots from time to time. "You go out there after Labor Day when the duck season opens up," he said. "It's a ... war zone." Fry said he's a member of the National Rifle Association and supports hunters, but that residents' homes being hit with pellets is too big a safety hazard to ignore. "Most hunters, real hunters, would not put people in jeopardy while they pursue their sport," he said. "It's not unreasonable to limit people's ability to hunt in densely populated areas." Fry has introduced legislation on the issue before. A measure in the last General Assembly never made it out of committee, and another one in 1998 also failed. Newspaper reports from that time document one Osceola resident who was taking down her Christmas tree when some birdshot came through her window. And while discharging a firearm inside city limits is illegal, unincorporated areas of St. Joseph and Elkhart County have developed significantly and now have denser populations. And, Fry said, the Department of Natural Resources isn't working hard enough to rein in "irresponsible hunting." "I'm not against hunting," Fry said. "But I want people to be responsible." Send your comments to Bernadette Bartlett at bbartlet@iga.in.gov and mention that you are commenting on the waterfowl hunting law proposed in high population density areas. She will forward them to the committee. I think the committee will meet at least one more time and probably twice more before they disband. Hopefully they will get a place a little closer to some on this board.
Jack
P.S. I know that Rob Carter is a big duck hunter so I'm guessing most of his guys are not real thrilled with this proposal. Hopefully it won't make it out of the committee.

Article published Aug 26, 2008 Indiana lawmakers hear hunting testimony Panel deciding whether river hunting should be regulated. By ED RONCO Tribune Staff Writer CHESTERTON, Ind. -- State lawmakers took testimony here Monday on a bill that could regulate hunting along the St. Joseph River. The Indiana General Assembly's Natural Resources Study Committee is considering a measure introduced last session by state Rep. Craig Fry, D-Mishawaka, that would forbid hunting along densely populated rivers in counties with more than 250,000 people. Dense population is defined as three or more people per acre. That would include portions of the St. Joseph River in unincorporated areas of St. Joseph County. Summer study committees, like the one that met Monday at Indiana Dunes State Park, analyze issues and decide if they should be made into bills.Fry's bill never got out of the House Natural Resources Committee during the General Assembly's brief 2008 session. Residents along the river expressed worries that gunfire could injure someone on shore, and said some homes have been struck by pellets from shotguns. Osceola resident Tim Brassell questioned the etiquette of hunters who fire in proximity to homes in the early morning hours. Hunters are legally allowed to begin shooting 30 minutes before sunrise. "I don't get up at a half-hour before (sunrise). I don't know how many of you do, but I don't, especially on the weekend," Brassell said. "I don't like being roused out of bed at quarter of six, or 6 o'clock, or 6:30 -- whatever a half-hour before sunrise is -- by somebody practicing their hunting." Michele Lewis also lives in the neighborhood. She got in trouble one season with Department of Natural Resources officers for playing music on outdoor speakers when the hunters woke her up."This is not about one hunter, one day, or even one section of the St. Joe River," she said. "It is about a safety issue that probably is an issue in other parts of the state." Hunters, meanwhile, told the lawmakers they fire their weapons responsibly and legally. South Bend resident Brian Hominiuk said he takes his two sons, age 5 and 6, hunting along the Elkhart and St. Joseph rivers. They pick those locations because there aren't a lot of hunters out there -- and therefore less competition. "The boys just love to go with me," he said. "If I was unsafe, my wife wouldn't allow me to take my kids out there."And South Bend resident Chris McDonald said hunters are safe, and don't fire indiscriminately. "That's not how bird hunting is done," he said. "We are not out there shooting in every direction." State Rep. Robert Bischoff, D-Greendale, was chairman of the House Natural Resources committee that didn't hear Fry's bill -- a decision made because of the shortened session and the amount of time likely required to address such an emotional issue, he said. Now, Bischoff is looking for a way to address the issue and hoping the summer study period gives him time to learn more, he said. "My biggest fear here is the way legislation was drafted last year; it only covered about five counties in the state of Indiana," he said. "Once you open that up, then you're going to have everybody probably want to protect their areas."State Sen. Ryan Mishler, R-Bremen, chaired Monday's meeting. He said lawmakers could decide what to do with the issue today or save it for the last summer study committee meeting. Fry's bill last year was House Bill 1194, and can still be viewed online at www.in.gov/legislative. Click on "Bills and Resolutions." __________________

Another GREAT point made was....
Crider also told the panel that the resident goose problem is a MAJOR issue here also.. And one of the KEY areas the DNR has too handle them is on the HUNTABLE areas of the river.....
This guy was AWESOME!!

Another from Crider.....
He also told the panel that if they limited the hunting abilities from everyone that complains about hunting near a house... DEER HUNTERS or WATERFOWL hunters.. That Indiana would be severely crippled from hunting abilities.....

Several years ago I did the same thing, took off work and drove 85 miles to WILLOW SLOUGH to voice my opinion regarding the goose season opening in October and running till it closed in late November.I suggested a short opener then reopen it later and let it run till the end of duck season. To my surprise thats what they did the very next year and we still do. YOUR EFFORTS WILL BE REMEMBERED BY ALL OF US .......ATTA BOY.

I'm hoping the committee will reject support for this bill and I believe they will. HOWEVER, Rep. Fry will most likely go ahead and submit the same bill again without support from the committee. It doesn't cost him a thing and his constituents will think that he is doing something on their behalf. When it fails again (it won't get past the Natural Resources House Committee) he'll shrug his shoulders and say "I tried". Politicians!!!!! Gota Love 'em!!! NOT!!!!
