Big bucks come out of Shades and Turkey Run state parks every year they have a hunt. This is true but its the same deer that run around the outsides of the park. There was a 170" giant that I had seen during bow season on my property that was killed just 100 yrds onto the park next to the property. Shades definately had a problem but I think there was so many people applying they just decided to hunt all the parks. There were only like 50 sum killed off of Turkey Run last year. I honestly have not seen less deer since the hunts started but I still see no point in it at this time. Like I said before those same deer leave the park all the time. Let the land owners do the reduction.

,,, Let the land owners do the reduction. Spoken like a true hunter of the adjoining property!!! I am sure everyone would love to have a refuge next to their honey hole too. The biologist are not nearly as biased in their assessment. Good luck this year and just hunt the same day as the draw hunt so you can get in on the mass migration!

I am not going to comment on this "deer reduction" topic. OK I changed my mind. Any of you that live close to the parks and visit them all the time probably know what I am talking about. I dont know why they think the reduction needs to happen. Why on earth would there be a browse line in a park were all they have to do is go out to the agricultural fields and eat something worth eating. I live basically in the Turkey Run State park. I hunt property next to it. I know what its like around there. The hunts screw things up bad. I dont agree with them. I am not saying some places dont need it but I am sure I am not alone when saying most are a mistake. While having a large surplus of deer in your hunting may seem beneficial in the short run, a large surplus can not be maintained indefinitely. Personally, I would rather deal with the headache of the reduction hunts than I would the results of EHD running rampant on an overpopulated, stressed herd in my hunting area. Besides, only having them hunted for a few days puts you ahead of the game compared to most anyone else in the state.

I did a lot of research on the park hunts a few years ago 'cause I couldn't undrestand why some hunts were hunted year after year and others were hunted every other year or so.
If I remember correctly, if the harvest numbers are = to or greater than a 50% success rate, then it gets hunted the next year too.
Only one buck can be taken per hunter AND we were told 2 years ago that if there are continued reports of letting deer walk just to wait for a "big un" then the DNR would confiscate all the horns the next year.
You are supposed to take the first 3 deer that you see, but the limit is still one buck.
I took 2 does the first day of the 2nd hunt, last year, then the 2nd day I saw 18 or so deer walking single file into the park from private land. I think I saw close to 30 deer during the last hunt, both while on the stand, and while driving out.
Good luck to everyone who applies this year! From the 3 that I took from the park, I kept 1 and donated the other 2. I figured that I am helping the Park, and someone who's hungry too.

Does anyone know, for the firearm hunts, can you only use firearms or can you also use archery equipment?

I've been led to believe that only firearms are allowed during a "Firearms" hunt. The odds of success at greater distances are better, and the park wants you to be successful.
