Hello, my name is Mike Cooper and for being 36 I'm just catching up with the technology. I was raised up hunting the old school way. Let mother nature do the guiding and she will answer your questions. Any way, just wanted to ask if anyone else is having a bad season. I've been in the woods my whole life, and have had great success, but this year seems to be a bust for me. Hello Mr. Cooper, Welcome to the site! We hope you enjoy it and get to post lots of photos. We like photos. Where corn is planted has a lot to do with the number of deer I see. My little 10ac is a pass through area. This year beans were planted all to the west of me and corn all to the east. Their bedding area is to the east, so there hasn't been a big need for them to come my way. So yes, even though I did take a couple from that area, it's been a slow year for seeing deer there. Next year, I plan to have my own little patch of corn.

My biggest problem is I don't really have any places to hunt other than public ground and we all know what that means in some cases. I live in Spencer County, and I'm hunting the HNF. From my experience, being in the right place at the right time is key. I don't get in the woods much, so I haven't been able to do any homework on the HNF. Is there anyone who can give me some pointers on this? I'm not asking for any handouts or vital Intel, just some suggestions.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only hunter that's having a slow year. This is my very season so far where I haven't had a deer in the freezer yet. I know that you get what you put into it, and that just might be my issue this year. None the less, I'm not giving up until the season is over. The other factor is the weather I believe. Been unseasonably warm and that also plays a role on the deer behavior as well.

I got one little ugly buck on a handicap hunt and that was it. I got busted on the ground several times by does. This year, I would love to have a little ugly buck. LOL ...three does and a little button buck for me, but good meat. I've not done much public land hunting, but there are guys here who do well with it. I'm not sure that I would hunt at all if I had to do it, but my handicap has a lot to do with this. Were you able to see any signs of deer?

I haven't seen any at all since hunting the HNF. As a matter of fact, my son and I have only seen 2 deer total since gun season. He saw a 4 point but I didn't, then we saw a mature doe about 30 minutes later, but we were unsuccessful on that harvest as well. Not sure what went wrong but we missed her at 37 yards with a muzzleloader. That was on the Warrick/Spencer County line going towards Evansville. That's where most of my success in the past has come from, but it's only good when the farmer plants corn and this year it's beans.

I'm new to this as well. My name is Mike and I'm 36. I've been doing a lot of reading on the posts from others. It's great to know that there are others out there who don't mind sharing their own success in the woods. It doesn't matter what age you are, or really how long you have been at this. Someone along the way has helped you out, or vise versa. That's what hunting is all about, passing on a legacy and tradition. Hunting is not a right it's a privilege and we either are or should be very proud of this. Yep! Have you been following this site long? These guys certainly have helped me tremendously, not only with knowledge, but encouragement. I'm not sure that I would have made it through that first year without them.

Honestly I just joined in yesterday. I stumbled upon this site while trying to get some intel on the HNF from the internet. I'm not really up to date on technology if you can believe that. I try to keep my life "old school", but my kids are trying to teach me "new school" tricks seeing that both are teenagers. In some ways it's helpful, but in other ways I'm stubborn.

Welcome Mr. Mike Cooper,
I think most areas in Indiana the number of deer is down a little. My area in Switzerland county was hit hard (90%) from EHD in 2012. It is still struggling with the number of deer. Ten years ago the number of food plots was small, now the number is huge. I think this moved a lot of deer from one spot without food plots to one's with food plots. Of course there are exceptions with some high quality farms without food plot, but have great mask/fruit/cover areas.

Hello bill9068, I live in Spencer County. It's a great county to live in, especially since our county has the doe season. Unfortunately, only 1 place that is public hunting and that is on the 4 lanes just East of Yankeetown. It's a small area, but has the potential for whitetails if some folks would respect it.

Well here we go again. My son and I went to Saddle Lake where I've been this whole weekend. Good news, finally saw a doe. Bad part of this is, we couldn't have stopped her with a grenade launcher. She was on a mission like Forrest Gump and she wasn't about to stop for nothing. Moral to my post is, aleast I know what a deer looks like.

Spencer County, that's God's country down there. I heard deer were thick down there.

It is God's Country and the country side is beautiful, but the deer population seems non existent. There is to much private property where I live due to AK Steel and AEP Power Plant. The deer know they are off limits and out of the danger of hunters like us, and that's why I have seen some monsters while out riding around and shining. Another reason for the lack of deer appearance is this problem, Poachers. I'm not going to get into this, as I'm pretty confident that we all have the same feelings towards this. As I said before, I'd love to put a deer down, but I just want to be in the tranquility of the woods. It's my place to kick back and release the stress of every day life, and it's even better when my 13 year old son is with me. I have a 14 year old daughter, and she has joined me a few times but struggles getting up early.

Hello everyone,
New to the site and pretty new to hunting. I have always been into camping and fishing but never had an opportunity to go out and hunt until this year. I have had nothing but a bunch of fun every time I've been out. Thank you guys for adding me.

I know there are many, hundreds probably, who just like to read the posts. So did you get one this year? It takes a special person to deer hunt in my opinion. I'm really good at sitting, so... Welcome!

Jon Snow 1John5:13 To answer your questions, I was able to harvest a doe. I also haven't been on this forum for very long but I do like to talk about hunting so I figured this would be a great place to start. I am totally sure that my coworkers are about over my conversations about hunting, fishing and guns. We enjoy stories here
