I agree about the habitat. There are several states that really push farmers & programs, but it's hard to do with $10 beans & $4 corn! My dad has 150 acres, & has the maximum amount in the govt programs they will allow.

how about all this money from our game bird habitat stamps it,s all going up norh for peasants. you cant tell me they can,t bring some of that money and bring it further south and spend it onhabitat a quail could live on. Ithink they could raise quail in some kind of wild controlled envirement like a refuge then transplant these wild bird around. all you here is birds will come back on there own where there is cover for them. I say they won,t if there isn,t any left

I didn't know gamebird money was used to feed the poor. I think someone's been reading too much Phil Potter. You should really inform yourself before going on a rant like that duck. I haven't bought a stamp in close to 15 years.

I live up in the northeast and i assure you the dnr is spending very little money on pheasant habitat up here. Where I live there are no to very few wild birds of any kind. I haven't seen a covey of wild quail in over 30 years. I own a Britney and only place I got to hunt her is a game preserve or put and take pheasants. We just don't have the habitat to support birds with all the urban development going on. The sad thing is it will never get any better. h.h.

There are huntable pockets of wild Pheasant in the Northeast. The best hunting in Indiana, though, is in our Western counties of Benton, Newton, White.
Also, there are huntable pockets of wild Quail in Indiana...most in our Southwest and Southeast counties.
While not the best state to hunt either, if you search, you will find.

There are some pretty good pockets of wild birds in Allen, Whitley, Kosciusko, Dekalb, Noble, Lagrange, and Steuben counties here in the northeast. I've done some very good quail shooting right here in Allen County.

You can tell the cocks apart from the hens on a covey rise?

yes it,s not that hard if your your dog is pointing them. you don, t kill many birds this way since you only just get 1 on a rise. the singles are easyer. only killed 2 hens all yr.

NRCS has put in quite a bit of CP-33 quail habitat in my part of the world. I've seen a good comeback on quail in my area of Southern Indiana.

chico......
Just what part of Indiana is that? I'm a life long quail hunter of well over 45 years of hunting and I can tell you for a fact that here in South Eastern Indiana where quail used to very good that now days..well I don't even hunt quail here in Indiana any longer.I've heard every story from the DNR that I really care to hear anymore..first it was the blizzards of the 70',80's and even the 90's.The problem is the state..that's right..THE STATE..doesn't give a damn about quail or quail hunters any longer..why...because all they're really concerned about is deer and deer hunters..period!!!!!!!! I remember back as far as the 1950's when my dad had a pen full of bird dogs ..I mean 10-12 dogs and they use to hunt quail back then here in South Eastern Indiana every day it wa sopen,we had guys come up here from Ky., Alabama, all over to hunt..not any more I don't even hunt them in my home state and this is mainly due to the DNR and it lack of caring about such small items as a quail and the amount of money that they produce...Oh..that's right..IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DOLLAR as for as the state is concerned!!!!!!!!!!!

Live and hunt mostly in Scott County. Used to hunt Henry and found a bunch up there too. I don't rely on the State to make my quail hunting better.
I don't understand the logic behind your arguments. Quail habitat isn't detrimental to deer hunting in the state. In fact I would argue that it adds quality habitat and travel corridors for whitetails.
Scott Co. was one of the counties they really pushed the CP-33 contracts. I look for NRCS to expand this because it has been beneficial from what I've seen. The problem there is that the price of corn is going up, so I don't think farmers are going to be excited about taking marginal land out of production.

I don't rely on the State to make my quail hunting better. Then why pay the state for a license to hunt quail then??? You should be able just to go out and bang the heck out of them...if you can find enough to hunt!!!!!! The logic part that you and others don't seem to understand is the state does more for deer hunters than they do for anyone else..when are they going to do something for the small game hunter such a squail, rabbit,or anything else. Indiana used to be at one time back from the 1950's until the quail all but died off a very good state for quail hunting especially here in S.E. Indiana but not any longer...when was the last time you can remember the state doing anything for quail here in S.E.Indiana? ? Deer hunting is where their money is at........sad but true!!!!!!

What exactly does the state do (habitat-wise) to improve deer hunting? Just curious.

The state took 800 acres away from the small game hunter and made a small game sanctuary at Salamonie Reservoir. That was over 5 years ago. They planted switch grass and summer grasses for the quail to reproduce. I hunt close to it all the time with dogs and to this day the only bird Ive seen was a pheasant. Loss of habitat is a killer here in N.E. Indiana, especially where I live. There are a few pocket of birds around but nothing on state ground unless you count put and take.
If I'm going to spend the time and effort to hunt birds then you will find me in the UP of Michigan. Ive spend a month there several times the last 10 years and had my dog point over 1000 birds each year, both woodcock and grouse. Ive shot a limit of grouse on the rise and thats five at one time. The woodcock are so thick most of the time they go up in doubles. The limit was 3 woodcock and for the life of me I don't know why it wasn't 5. Most afternoons of bird hunting were only 2-3 hours and it was nothing to put up 30+ birds. If I still own my Brit next year I'm going back there for at least one week and maybe two. h.h.

The blizzard of 78 is what really destroyed our bird populations here in central Indiana. It pretty much wiped out quail, Hungarian partridge, and pheasants, and they have never been able to recover. Pen raised birds do not last long in the wild for some reason. Farming practices and loss of habitat are not helping things at all either. The big farmers bulldoze every fence row that they can here in Madison County, and there goes a lot of the habitat for quail, rabbits, and deer. Oh and woods and thickets are a thing of the past. If you don't have some ground along White River or Pipe Creek forget it. That's why I don't bother too much with hunting around home anymore. The good old days for quail and rabbit hunting was 40 years ago, and deer hunting was 20 to 25 years ago now. How many bucks killed in Madison County are in the Hoosier Record Book from the past ten years?

i,m with birddog I ,v seen them good o days and they will never be back unless the state gets off there ass with small game you can have a few individuals lik chico to plant there private little quail patches but that not going to help that much around the state . indivduals just do.nt have enough funds to do it even quail unlimited won,t do it by themselfs there will be a buch of young kids that will never get to walk behind a dog on a rock solid point and get the thrill of a covey rise and its a shame
