I bumped more hens today than I ever have on opening day. I like to see all those mamas but the dog definitely disagrees. Luckily the first flush this morning yielded this first year rooster because we couldn't buy any color after that.

Glad you have birds in your area. I have to drive almost 90 miles to find birds. Ive got a nice Brit that needs hunted but no birds other than a game preserve. h.h.

Saw a rooster while I was driving to pick up my deer meat this afternoon. Great looking bird too, flew into the road then ran back into the tall stuff. First one I have seen in West central IN since I have moved here.

Did you hunt near South Bend?
I am planning on taking my pointer to Lasalle FWA tomorrow morning. I am hoping the closer I get to Illinois the more birds we can find.
The pheasant oulook from the state did not look very promising.

Hunted at Lasalle FWA this morning. We saw one hen. No Roosters. A guy that was leaving the same time as I was had gotten a rooster. Kicked the bushes at Winamac FWA after that. I had the opportunity to get a couple of rabbits, but didn't shoot.

Lasalle is set up for easy hunting. Lots of mowed paths, some corn, sunflowers and sorghum out. Lots of grass and some good fencelines and ditch banks.
I wish we had seen more birds.

Thank you very much. Good luck with the birds, have you tried Willow Slough? Several years ago we were down at Minnehaha and they had quite a few quail hunters down there.

The online system for put and take makes things much more convenient. However, I do miss the flexibility of the old system. It's nice to be able to spontanteously take tomorrow off work and go down and get in on a hunt. Plus, it was sort of an art to get in line at a point that would get you in your favorite spot. Now you have to have your plans laid down months in advance and it's next to impossible to catch a last minute hunt with a party of 2 or more.
As far as areas to hunt without a dog, finding birds is one thing, retreiving cripples is a whole separate ballgame. There are definitely some areas you can bump birds without a dog, but from my experience and IMO you are asking for alot of frustration and lost cripples. All of the preserves require dogs and most of the public land that has huntable populations receives considerable pressure. Your best bet is to buddy up with someone that has a dog.

I have walked through Atterbury a few times after their put and takes are over and kicked up a few birds without dogs. Never connected on any, but they are in there.
