Had a great four day grouse hunt in Wisconsin. As a group of five, we averaged 35-40 flushes per day. If you count Woodcock, double that number. We don't count them because we don't shoot them. They are great dog work however. We had several "covey" flushes on grouse where as many as seven birds took off at once. This usually means a good late hatch where young birds haven't are still in clutches.
The birds were in popple / pine mixture areas where the popple was broom handle size. We killed a total of 18 birds and are already planning for next year. Looks as if the birds are making a come back. If you can get north it is worth the trip.
