I'm curious, do you pay to hunt (lease) or do you have permission to hunt private ground. My understanding is knocking on doors is a thing "Dad" use to do.

I dunno about South Dakota......but the last that I was in North Dakota, the law is that you can hunt any land without permission unless it's posted. Still a good idea to check with the nearest farm to make a good impression, but up there finding a farm house to ask permission can be a task since there are vast fields with few homes between.

In South Dakota I have a 12,000 acre piece of ground that I hunt on each year, each year I always book it for opening week of the next year, the catch here is the cost to lease this mans land is "dirt cheap" when compared to other sites around Mitchell or Winner.I get a four bedroom house, complete with everything but the food that we take and it only cost me$130.00 per day and hunt right out the back door...cheap compared to the $250.00 and up range!!!Plus we get to hunt sharp tails, coyote and the big thing is the prairie dog towns which we venture into each afternoon after taking the limit of pheasant...awesome hunt!!!!!!! The real good thing is nobody else ever books this land to bird hunt on but the guy fills up with dog hunters and deer hunters each year.
