Anyone hitting the sporting clays and skeet range getting ready to go in a month? Opening 3 or 4 days of Dove has become a much of a ritual for me as opening of deer season. Will be down in the Sullivan County area for 5 days over the opener. I just hope the fields are ready.

I haven't tried dove yet , but I'm looking at it since the quail aren't too numerous here .

I was lucky enough to have hunted the very first season in Indiana on doves when the limit was 12. Got my 12th dove with my 100th shot. Haven't missed a season since.

I haven't tried dove yet , but I'm looking at it since the quail aren't too numerous here . Only bad thing about Dove season as it tends to be hotter than h*ll every opener. But man is it fun when you have a good field. Lots of shooting during the day, a cold shower (strictly to cool off ) then a cold beer or three tends make for a great time regardless of the heat. If you decide to do it and don't have anywhere down your way to go, let me know.

Might take you up on that , Indy , it sounds like fun . Right at the moment all I have is a 20 guage pump with modified , full , and Undertakerâ„¢ chokes , and it's still a little new to me . I've mainly shot .22s and MLs for the last several years , so some clays may be in order . My son-in-law and I have discussed getting some clays and a launcher for the back yard , and I think I'd have to get a few weeks worth in first so that I don't embarass myself too badly .

Well, practice sure does help. But no matter how much practice one gets, dove will find a way to embarass you. You don't have much to worry about, part of the fun is giving each other h*ll all day long.

I am sure I will get out for at least one dove hunt after chasing the big birds for a few. Haven't hit the clays much this year, but still have a bunch of reloads so with 2 cases of 12 gauge I should be able to get 5-10 doves again this year. That is pure pride speaking, no embarassment.;D

The first time I went dove hunting I had went to Galyans the day before. I figured I would "splurge" and buy 4 boxes of shellls........
I really thought I was overdoing it!!!!!.....When I got in line to "check out" a fella came up behind me with a WHOLE case!!!
His first words were "Is that all you are gonna buy?"
I was borrowing shells before the hunt was over!!!!!

I absolutely love dove hunting!!! Last year was my first time and I killed 6 birds in 18 shots....not too shabby! I hope I get drawn for one of the hunts on managed fields....if not I will hunt public land somewhere. I have no where to go on private land.

I love dove hunting!!!
But let me say that this eeason will SUCK if you are depending on Fish & Wildlife areas to hunt.
I have been to 2 properties that have been the best in the past and both are TERRIBLE due to weeds.
Atterbury and Hardy Lake are poor at best.
It would be nice if folks in other regions would do a quick drive by and post what they see.
Hardy Lake.............. if you aren't in fisrt 20 of draw, good luck.
Atterbury.............. area 12 sucks, 13 has one decent field may hold 5 hunters..........

I don't mess with the F&W areas anymore. Not enough birds, and too many guys shooting birds out in front of other hunters.

Man Joe, that sucks about Hardy. I am still going to try to go down there and look around. We FINALLY got a little rain today. I wonder why they let the weeds get the fields this year...
By the way, I love to dove hunt, too! Last year was my first year as well. I brought 6 boxes of shells. I've never shot sporting clays before so I had no idea if I could hit the stupid things. My memory now lapses, but I think I used just under 50 shells to get my 15. It was either just under 50 or just over 50. I can't remember now. Good times for sure though! Joe and I had a blast! I really hope I get to use my 20ga. this year on them. Should be more exciting.
Matthew.

I got drawn 18th for the second day at Mississinewa last year and they were thick. Everyone got some and there were tons of people spread out all over the place.

Our season opens Sept. 3rd. We don't miss a opener down this way. all of the Walmarts bring in pallets of shot gun shells in August. By the first day of season most stores will be out of shells. But it does not matter how much you practice you still won't be ready. some days you will do real good and others days you can't hit any. I have only once got my limit with less than two boxes, then the next day shot a whole case to take only one bird. So it does not matter who you are they will humble you real quick.

Aren't the Whitewings supposed to be a bit faster and dart more?
Cday,
I'm afraid if I did all that much shooting I'd have to go to a semi-auto Remington to less the recoil.
That would have to wear on a shoulder after awhile.
I've never hunted doves, but I understand it can be a HUMBLING experience..

I got bad news Saturday, my retriveing pointer wont be home from summer camp for 2 weeks, so I'm going to have to find a field that I can locate the downed birds in. last year I hunted on my place with tall grass and we never lost 1 bird. If I can't find a better field I may just wait for my hunting partner to get home. Hey Gunedude, will that old dog of yours pick up dove? If he will you can tell him he's invited to come over here with you.
