I've got a 30 acre field adjoining the woods i hunt in which its about 50 acres. I'm wanting to plant something, not sure what yet, but something. The field has some grass, but mostly weeds about waist high.
I thought i'd plant something along the edges, and some in the woods. But i don't have a clue on how to go about doing this. I have no way of getting a tractor, i might be able to rent something for my atv. I wouldn't even know what to rent, if i could.
So any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

whitetail institute has some seed blend that is call "no plow". it only needs 4 hours of light a day. does not need any tillage. i have planted some this year and it is doing really well. i would spray some roundup or something to kill off the unwanted weeds a couple of weeks before you want to plant. then go back clear out the dead weeds and broadcast the seed with a little hand seeder that you can buy just about anywhere pretty cheap. try to plan on planting when the forcast shows some rain in the next couple of days. hope this helps you a little

Lug First thing you have to do is get rid of the weeds. Since you dont have a tractor but 4*wheeler i would see if you can rent a pull behind mower. mow the weeds as short as you can 20 -30 yds from the edge of the woods. then rent or borrow a sprayer and spray round-up or something comparable. wait two weeks and you should be close to bare ground. check at ATV places and see if they rent or can tell you somebody you can rent a disc to pull with your 4wheeler. run the disc over the ground until you have 3-4" of loose dirt. you need a seeder-spreader to apply the seed and fertilizer. then get a section of old chain link fence or metal mat and drag the plot. plant whatever seed you think will be the best for you. shot plot, full draw would be my choice since you dont have a mower to keep weeds out of clover. use 12=12=12 fertilizer @ 300 lbs to the acre. you could also plant wheat or oats but oats will die at the first freeze. depending on how much you plant it will cost about 50.00 an acre for fertilizer, 10.00 - 20.00 for seed and the rental price. herbicide is around 30.00 a quart. you will have anywhere from 100.00 - 5-600.00 in a plot. it depends on how much you plant. in my area fall plots should be in from mid August to the first of Sept. i wouldn't waste my time in trying to plant in the woods unless you want to take on a big job clearing. you might check around the area and see if there is any farmer who would disc you the ground for you. h.h.
