Worked like a dog Friday afternoon and all day today planting. Put in about 250 trees to create a new grove out in what is presently a field of tall grass. Did a 50/50 mix of Washington Hawthornes and Cedars. Also planted some blueberry bushes, some red rasberry bushes, and a bunch of flowers for the boss. Next, I'm going to do a couple acres of good old fashioned field corn, and just leave it stand. Of course it will be strategically located near a good place for a tree stand. Plan on getting several apple trees also, to provide another food source.

Just 250? That's weak! ;D ;D Why, just last Thursday we planted about 1100 inside of 6 hours. Of course that was with a tree planter being pulled by a decent sized Kubota, and there were 3 of us. We've got about 4-5000 to get stuck in somewhere near Delphi as soon as conditions get better. Make sure you keep the grass mowed, and it certainly won't hurt to kill the grass around the new trees. Sounds like you did similar to what I'd like to do in my little corner of the world. I'd like to find a small planter that I can pull with my WD, but one that won't cost me a month's salary!

Danf - This last planting puts my tally up to approx. 12,500 trees I've planted on the place since I bought it ..... so I guess you could say, I'm making a little headway. I set them up so you can run a bush hog down between the rows. They grow ten times faster if you mow between them a couple times annually. Used a tree planter myself, when I did the big plantings. For small patches like this all a guy needs is a shovel.
What kind of stuff are you planting?

Most trees were purchased from the state nurseries. My local soil conservation office hooked me up when I put the ground into CRP / permanent wildlife habitat program. When I purchased the big quanties, seems like I paid around $0.40 per tree.
Believe it or not, the Izaak Walton League ran an article on my habitat project a couple years ago in their nationally published magazine, Outdoor America.
I kind of challenged on the photo posting thing, but could e-mail some to you, if you want to post them up. One of these days I'm going to step into the current century. I still use a 35mm camera.

Ok, 12,000 is a pretty healthy number. ;D We've planted a variety so far, and it's usually that way from what I understand. This is my first year with the seedlings, so it's somewhat new to me. Off the top, I think most of our varieties have been: walnut, bald cypress, norway spruce, white pine, shumard oak, pin oak, hawthorne, crabapple, cherry, white oak, maybe some red oak, sycamore, and burr oak. We're still waiting on the ground to dry so we can get the Delphi planting done. I've got a feeling we may end up mucking that one in, as the trees are starting to break dormancy.

Thanks Steiny. I may check out Jasper Pulaski, I know the asst property manager and can hopefully get a tour of what they have because I heard all you really need to do is fill out a order form. I'd like to check out the place first.

That's all there really is to it. You have to pick up the trees at the nursery (either at JP or Vallonia) and pay for them, but that's really about it. Hit the DNR site, and go through the forestry division and you can find the form there. It's probably too late to "order" any, but there *may* be some leftovers (though it's doubtfull this late). Your local soil and water conservation office should have the order forms too.
Sounds like we are going to plant the seedlings tomorrow at the site near Delphi. I'll try to remember to take the camera along...
