Text for the Day -- Jeremiah 33:14-17 ---------- The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness."
For thus says the LORD: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel.
Devotional ---------- The prophecies of a messiah are spoken of through many metaphors. Here the promise is described as a righteous branch. The image of the branch is a description of something akin to a family tree. David's family line of rulers will continue, but there will be a particular One who will execute justice and righteousness. Christians interpret this prophecy as referring to Jesus. His kingdom is without end and is marked by justice and righteousness for all.
Prayer ----------------- I thank you for the gift of this righteous One, O Lord. Amen
