Text for the Day -- Ecclesiastes 2:14, 11-14 ---------- Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had spent in doing it, and again, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.
So I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly; for what can the one do who comes after the king? Only what has already been done. Then I saw that wisdom excels folly as light excels darkness. The wise have eyes in their head, but fools walk in darkness. Yet I perceived that the same fate befalls all of them.
Devotional ---------- As he reflects on life, the writer of Ecclesiastes finds that life is vanity. No matter how one lives, wisely or foolishly, you end up the same, dead. Life is judged here with no thought of resurrection or eternal life, no distinction of an afterlife. Underneath this rather pessimistic view is the conviction that there is mystery in God's ways that cannot be understood. Humans need to remain humble in the face of death.
Prayer --------------- Help me look beyond the frustrations of this life to the life you give in Christ, O God. Amen
