Text for the Day -- Jeremiah 8:4-7 ---------- You shall say to them, Thus says the LORD: When people fall, do they not get up again? If they go astray, do they not turn back? Why then has this people turned away in perpetual backsliding? They have held fast to deceit, they have refused to return. I have given heed and listened, but they do not speak honestly; no one repents of wickedness, saying, "What have I done!" All of them turn to their own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle. Even the stork in the heavens knows its times; and the turtledove, swallow, and crane observe the time of their coming; but my people do not know the ordinance of the LORD.
Devotional ---------- In contrast to the animals and birds, humans do not know what time it is. God, through Jeremiah, says that it is time to repent and turn back to God. But, people rush headlong on into their own destruction. If people fall while they are running, they usually get up, but not Israel. If people get lost, they return to the path they started on and know, but not Israel. It is too true that many humans follow Israel's example when it comes to their relationship with God.
Prayer ------------------ Help me pay attention to what time it is, especially when it is time for repentance, O God. Amen
