Text for the Day -- Joel 2:18-19, 28-29 ---------- Then the LORD became jealous for his land, and had pity on his people. In response to his people the LORD said: I am sending you grain, wine, and oil, and you will be satisfied; and I will no more make you a mockery among the nations.
Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream reams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit.
Devotional ---------- The Pentecost event in the New Testament was not announced. Years before, through the prophet Joel, God spoke of a time when God's Spirit would be poured out, not on just a few select prophets, on all flesh. Each believer would have God's Spirit within and be vehicles of God's creative and prophetic word. The Book of Acts quotes this passage to explain, in a sermon by Peter, what happened on Pentecost.
Prayer ----------------- Continue to encourage my faith journey, Lord, by reminding me of the long but consistent way you promised life with you and in your works and Word through history. Amen
