Text for the Day -- I Samuel 15:1-3, 10-12
----------
Samuel said to Saul, 'The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his
people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the Lord. Thus
says the Lord of hosts, "I will punish the Amalekites for what they
did in opposing the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt. Now go
and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not
spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and
sheep, camel and donkey." '
The word of the Lord came to Samuel: 'I regret that I made Saul king,
for he has turned back from following me, and has not carried out my
commands.' Samuel was angry; and he cried out to the Lord all night.
Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, and Samuel was told,
'Saul went to Carmel, where he set up a monument for himself, and on
returning he passed on down to Gilgal.'
Devotional
----------
Saul, as king, was a great disappointment to God. He did not follow
God's directives, even though he thought he had. The story continues
with God seeking to anoint a new king. With the rise of David as the
new king, Saul sought to kill David and keep the throne secure for
himself. in the process Saul became a victim of depression and he
gradually became more and more separated from God. Having been chosen
by God, it is still possible to lose the way. The disciplines that
keep us connected to God are important. They help us not be overcome
by our human weaknesses and lose the blessing that fellowship with
God brings.
Prayer

Continue to stir my yearning to stay close to you, O God. Amen
