Text for the Day -- Exodus 30:22-30
----------
The Lord spoke to Moses: Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh five
hundred shekels, and of sweet-smelling cinnamon half as much, that
is, two hundred and fifty, and two hundred and fifty of aromatic
cane, and five hundred of cassia-measured by the sanctuary shekel-and
a hint of olive oil; and you shall make of these a sacred
anointing-oil blended as by the perfumer; it shall be a holy
anointing-oil. With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the
ark of the covenant, and the table and all its utensils, and the
lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, and the altar
of burnt-offering with all its utensils, and the basin with its
stand; you shall consecrate them, so that they may be most holy;
whatever touches them will become holy. You shall anoint Aaron and
his sons, and consecrate them, in order that they may serve me as
priests.
Devotional
----------
God gives the Israelites a recipe for anointing oil. Notice that the
oil is to be used for very special purposes. It is meant for
consecrating or setting apart things and people for special use by
God. The oil is meant to be used by the priest and designates holy
things. Anointing is still used in the Christian community. We anoint
at Baptism. This signifies that the one anointed at baptism is set
apart for a purpose. In the New Testament we discover the priesthood
of all believers. Each Christian is meant to pray for others, bless
others and be a healing and justice presence for others. If you have
been baptized you have been anointed, set apart, for specific tasks
for God in the kingdom and the world. You are special in God's eyes
and will be used by God as you respond to God's leading.
Prayer
--------------------
O God, thank you for choosing me and setting me apart for your use.
Amen
