I started to video last year and I have some alright turkey footage. I was just learning how to use the camera so things were a little shaky because I should have had the camera on manual focus and not auto.

I've been videoing mine and other peoples hunts for about 4 years now and I enjoy it more and more each year. Since the 1st of the year I went back through all my footage and came up with 3 DVDs I setup and edited just on Turkey and Deer hunting. I have 2 Sony cameras that I currently use.

Oggie, What model Sony cameras are you using? Regular Handycams or 3CCD camera? Just curious. We are always interested in guys who are videoing and their footage if they are interested in being a part of what we are doing, www.hoosierhitsquad.com. We just need a certain level of video quality. Even if you're not interested in what we're doing, we are conducting an intro seminar for those that are interested in getting into outdoor videography and post production, Aug. 18th, check out our events schedule for details. Keep it coming always interested in chatting about it, or answering any questions.

I'm up there all the time, at the Gander Mtn. store, shopping. If there's ever any questions or help you might need just let me know and I can hook up with you. Are you filming currently, or looking to start?

Currently only filming with small camcorder. I would like to meet and possibly discuss. Do you have time next week?

Sure, just let me know when you're thinking, and we'll hook up. There are some pretty decent small video cameras for alittle amount of money, one that comes to mind is a Panasonic, I don't remember the model #, but it is around $500-$600, it is mini DV which is important, it is 3CCD which is also important, it is only a 10X optical zoom, but that is alright for up close work (not for you long range rifle hunting), and it has image stabilization which is important also. The down side is the low optical zoom, and it is small and lightweight so hard to get still image except on a tripod or mount, but it would be the very bare bones minimum. Otherwise the best entry level camera is the Canon GL2, which if you work hard on ebay you can pick a good one up used for the $1,300-$1,500 range. The real key to getting decent footage overall is that the Mini DV format is the best quality vs. Hi8, hard drive, DVD formats. And the biggest optical zoom you can get (digital zoom is no good, don't use it), a 3 CCD camera is crucial also for recording quality, and last but not least is the optical stabilazation, it helps to keep the image from being too shaky. The rule of thumb is that the bigger and heavier the camera, the more stable the image (better quality), but it is a tradeoff for lugging a heavy camera. If you're recording from a tree mount for deer or tripod for turkey it helps to balance this out, in return you want the best quality mount you can afford for the quality of motion on the mount. Some things are best shot freehand though, especially waterfowl hunting, trying to film from a mount or tripod is next to impossible. One other rule of thumb is the size of the lens, the wider angle or larger the lens, the lower light conditions you can record in and vice versa. So to offset some of the smaller lenses, buying a good quality wide angle lens helps to gather more light and you gain a larger overal frame of view, and also a doubler or 2x wide angle lens will do this and also double the optical zoom capabilities of your camera also. Just a few tidbits for you.

Sorry, also one other thing for you guys that are videoing. If you ever plan on editing your footage for a DVD or other uses, DON'T use the on camera editing feature like: fade, wipe, etc. All of this editing will be done by the computer software, just raw footage is what you need.
