Here is my long story, short. I started hunting a piece of private land 4 years ago and there were deer everywhere. It seems like each year since, I have seen less. Well a bunch of trees were logged early this year and now there is an abundance of dense new growth everywhere. It all looks like prime deer habitat now. I have though about getting a few trail cams to scout for me. How much do you all think they really help?

i like them a lot. i have lots of them. you can get an idea of how many deer are using your property and also see what kind of bucks are out there roaming around that you wouldnt see other wise. i have pics of bucks that i wont see come hunting season then when season opens ill have pics of bucks that i didnt see all summer

IMO, trailcams are worth it for the entertainment value alone. They can also provide useful information to supplement your scouting such as: time of deer movement, the preferred food source, the number and size of deer visiting your hunting area, and lastly which areas receive the most traffic.
If you decide to get one, invest in a digital model and I would highly recommend one of the Cuddebacks. They cost a little more but are definitely worth for me.

I would agree with what has been said. Dad bought one from Sportsman's Guide last year, a digital model. Not the greatest camera in the world, nor the fastest to take a pic, but it's better than nothing. We got some pics of a couple of bucks last season that we had no idea were there, including a one-antlered buck. Also got a lot of shadows and several squirrels. ;D I borrowed the camera and set it out on a mineral block site on Friday night. Had it set to take a picture at 2 minute intervals as movement allowed. It filled up sometime between Friday night and Tuesday night when I pulled it. 108 pics on the lower quality setting. I'm waiting on the USB cable to download them into the 'puter. If there's anything worth posting, I'll put them up. I want one, but the $100-400 to buy one would buy a lot of formula and diapers right now!!

I love my trail cams because my daughter loves to mess with them with me. To tell you the truth I see more deer by watching from a distance with a spotting scope then I get on my trail cams. There have been many deer that I see on the farm that have eluded my trail cam but not my spotting scope. If I live a long way from my hunting area instead of on my hunting area they would be priceless.

I think it is your most valuable scouting tool. It's there 24/7 telling you what came by. It also lets you know how many mature bucks you have using your property, and sometime just pure entertainment looking at the pictures.

More good things to say about trail cams.........I bought the low end of the digital models $90.00. If I had any advice, I would buy the best you can afford. I have a friend who bought a Cuddy and it is so much better than my Moultrie.
