I suppose it's nice to poll the hunting public, I still think it is a mistake. I would prefer that they would make a decision based on the good of the herd. If it is 1 buck a year fine, if is something else fine as well. If there is a year when it would need to be doe only I'm good with that as well. I would have no problem sliding the number around as necessary. I'm far more concerned about having a good healthy population than antler size. Pretty much my position as well , and something tells me that's exactly what will happen after a few years of this antler based idiocy . The actual research data will tell the final story , and once it does that "doe only" season may not seem so far fetched or be so far away .

I'm confused decator, if you don't like the OBR only because it's for hunters who want an ego trip, why do you want to kill more than one buck so bad ? Why not kill only Does? Simply because I enjoy killing bucks more. I like harvesting does too, but bucks are more interesting, more unique and more rare. If you've seen one slick, you've pretty much seen them all. It's just like owning more than one 12 gauge. There doesn't have to be a reason why, just because I want to! Plus, I think it's every bit as importatnt to kill more bucks as well as does to keep our rapidly growing herd in check. If the DNR had come out and said, "we're killing too many bucks and the herd is suffering", I would have started a push for the OBR. But that's not the case. It was started by people wanting T.V. quality deer.

Thanks for posting the survey results.
Anyone know the percentage of deer hunters who are license exempt? I notice that they were completely excluded from the survey pool. I believe the figure is significant.

If they wanted to find out what the hunters wanted why did they not send out the surveys to the lifetime license holder?

I liked the good old days of One buck with Archery and a second buck with either shotgun OR muzzleloader. I think most true hunters will still pass on a smaller buck during either archery or gun and not just shoot a small buck because they have a tag. I let smaller bucks walk before the OBR and would still do so like i used to if they went back to the two bucks rule. I just dont like having to decide to take a shot on a decent buck during archery and then know that you will be done for the rest of the year when it comes to a buck during gun season. This is my first post on the OBR and I thought things were fine with one buck in archery and one during gun.

Actually Decatur, it's not as important in killing bucks to manage a deer population. You take one buck away and another will take it's place. Strictly speaking, to manage the herd, you manage the does. Now, if you're concerned about the genetics of the deer herd (health, antlers, etc), you would manage the bucks as well. Seeing as you're not into trophy management (which is not QDMA as is often confused on this and other sites), then taking two bucks is nothing but a personal choice. I don't have any problem with that at all but shooting two bucks has nothing to do with population management. See, nature has a funny way of balancing things out in the animal kingdom. Take waterfowl and predators for example. When we have a large amount of waterfowl, the predator population grows. You can kill a predator but another one will come in to take it's place. When the waterfowl population declines, the predator population will do the same. Kind of a supply and demand thing in the wild kingdom. The same happens within the deer population. Too many does? You'll see more bucks being born. Other way around and you get the same thing only in reverse. I've even read a study that when a country of people are at war, you'll see a spike of male children being born. I wish I still had that study as it was quite interesting.

If they wanted to find out what the hunters wanted why did they not send out the surveys to the lifetime license holder? Thank you very much-SOME hunters want our Lifetime Licenses to be revoked, then we don`t even get included as a whole in the obr survey. @!&$%^$!#@!

i never understood why someone would want to kill a forky then wait till gun and kill a spike!! No disrespect intended-but would you agree that if someone buys the required licenses, and hunts lawfully and ethically, that they`re really entitled to kill whatever they choose?

I **AGREE** with that statement 100% I don't care if we are a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 buck state......All I know is that one rule change generaly drives another. So we end up a one buck state, I can assure there will be another (or two) rules that change because of the OBR!!!

i never understood why someone would want to kill a forky then wait till gun and kill a spike!! Foolish Greed is the answer!!!! And Greg-you`re entitled to your opinion-but that is an awfully knee-jerk response. Every one of us loves to kill bucks, some, want ONLY trophy bucks to kill, and that`s perfectly fine. Some are happy with whatever buck wanders by, and that`s perfectly fine too. So everybody loves to kill bucks-something awfully desirable about that bone on their head. Problem with obr is-before obr, you could trophy hunt-post obr, we`re living with your trophy management. If you can step back, put the emotion away just for a couple minutes, it`s there for all to see.

According to the "Methods" section, there were 2,000 LTL's surveyed.... What I don't get, and I'm interested in Woody's opinion here, is why they used 4,000 archery license folks, and only 2,000 each from firearms, muzzy, and LTL... I would have thought one would randomly pick 10,000 names from the entire POS pool, and then break down the results by license type as part of the analysis. If not, and you go with this "stratified pool" concept, why wouldn't each license group have the same number of samples toward the pool total, e.g. 2,000 each... As a landowner, I also agree with earlier comments about the lack of sampling from license exempt groups. If they had a web option for those with purchased licenses, why not use the web form for license exempt hunters???
