Make sure you get a nice holster, a bad holster will make you want to leave your weapon at home.Don't be surprised when you end up with a bag full of holsters. I have tried just about every style out there, from expensive to cheap. I would bet most of us here that regularly carry have a surplus of leather in the closet. One thing that I have learned is, if it isn't comfortable you won't carry it! Excellent advice.

I think I have 4 or 5 pistols that i bought to carry. My advise is to walk around the store with it for 10 min or so, if you pull your pants up more than once while walking around with it , pass it up...
Currently carry a Taurus 38 revolver ultra light Titanium , very light and very comfortable..
I also have a subcompact Glock 40 cal but with it fully loaded was to much to carry in summer time , ok in winter with heavy belt..
Truck gun is Walter P22. Love that little gun also, lacks nockdown power but very accurate

I have the Glock 19 9mm, don't carry it always. If I carried more, would want something smaller and lighter. Regardless, it is an awesome handgun. Look at what police carry, my advice.

I'd strongly recommend a .22 semi-auto. Small, compact, and fun & cheap to shoot so you can get good with it. My favorite is a Walther P-22. I like the semi auto -vs- revolver for safety. Carry a full clip in the magazine but none in the chamber, all you got to do is rack it once and it's hot. A revolver is a little more dangerous, as an accidental trigger pull will make it go bang.
Stay away from the cheapo Jennings and other $150 pistols as they are jam-o-matics, and always shoot the copper coated .22 ammo, no bare lead bullets.
You'll do far more plinking than you ever will "personal protecting" and it will serve well as protection, if ever needed. No doubt someone will speak up and say a .22 isn't enough for two legged vermin, but I'd beg to differ. Shoot any human a couple times with a .22 and they are gonna quit messing with you. Put one in their melon and they're done for. Been one heck of a lot of 1000# beef and 400# hogs put under with a .22.

I love my Taurus 85 Ultra-lite in .38 spl +P which is DAO because it is hammerless. It is very light and quite accuate for a gun that small. The titanium would be even better but it is incredibly expensive and recoil with full house .38 spl +P loads would be unpleasant.

You never metioned the type of gun. Don't forget about revolvers, maybe something hammerless and light like a S&W airlite . Although good semi-auto's are very reliable, its good to know that revolvers don't jam. You might have only six shots, but unless the gun mal-functions internally, all six are gonna go off. Little snubbies are ugly, but if you are staking your life on it, function is a consideration. Just a thought.
Whatever you pick, I hope you never need it, and if you do, you hit your mark! Good luck.

I always liked the Walther PPK/S in .380 ... lighter and less bulk than the Glock's, and you don't have that pesky underarm bulge...
If you're going into battle, a 15-round clip is nice, but for daily carry, all that lead and brass is a bit of weight... HH is right...

The police carry a firearm for a completely different reason than we do, that reason being threat management. The number of rounds was never a deciding factor for me in a carry gun. Five or six rounds should be sufficient for any self defense situation. I have three different firearms I carry depending on where I am going and the weather conditions, which dictate how many clothes I'll have on to conceal a gun. The one I find myself carrying most often is the little pocket gun simply because it's so handy. If I didn't already have all I needed, I would be tempted to check out one of the little Kel-Tec pistols.
