EHD is transmitted by the Midge Fly. Current temperature conditions are not supportive for it to survive. Deer, like people do get sick , there are multiple possibilities, but EHD isn't one of them. Found a dead fawn in mid-May last year laying on the edge of an old pond. Reported to DNR with pics. Did not hear back from them. I would report, but I am doubtful they will respond. Even emailed Joe Caudell , he answered, saying too early for EHD, most likely died of other causes.

Some may recall the old livestock pond I had dug out last summer. Was an EHD pit, only about a foot deep. Now has 7' -8' water and no muck. Will take skidsteer and level out dam ouch dries out.

Doubtful EHD , just too cold for midge flies. Could have been hit by car and had internal injuries, maybe internal parasites , etc.

Just pulled cards for week. (-0- antlered deer pics.) Last week had pics of 10 different bucks holding . Time to start looking it appears, and March 1 is my usual shed hunting start date anyways.

Chris and his dad have killed a bunch of big deer , and are good people. I am sure he will do well.

boonchaser, I'm seeing deer being VERY skittish of the protein feeder I have out. It's a 55 gal barrel style, drop tube with 4 openings. The bottom of the opening is roughly 40" from the ground. I have never had any issues and have been supplemental feeding for years. I place mine near water and other food sources in open areas where deer can see predators.

Our local school offers the Hunter Education Course through Physical Ed class. Granddaughter passed with a near perfect score. Proud grandpa.

I just saw the 10 pointer around my home yesterday and still carrying the rack. I generally don't look till 3-1 and after. Most are still carrying here in SE IN. Just happened on 1 above in a clover field.

Hard to say, but raccoons can be mean in my experience. I would guess both lived to see another day.

JMO but I think the DNR are being proactive for when CWD is found in deer herd here. (Think some are over thinking this), I have shot deer that were left overnight and coyote's beat me to them. (I never tagged those deer, or reported them.) Think this verbiage is being added for diseased deer. JMO So you knowingly killed deer and didn’t tag due to coyotes getting them? I have had it happen twice. (Both doe's). Nothing left to tag, just hide and bones. No Reason to tag or report, certainly not 'Wanton Waste". Another time shot a doe, little back, waited a hour and then went to find with my dog. Found her , with 3 coyote's eating on her hindquarters. ( Cut my dog lose and he ran them off.) Called my local processer who would not process deer, ended up having a Amish processor do it, but only ended up with about 30 lbs. of meat. He cut off all the hindquarter and threw it away, I did tag that deer , since was able to salvage some of it.

It's pretty vague I wouldn't want to be the co to act like wildlife biologist JMO but I think the DNR are being proactive for when CWD is found in deer herd here. Who determines what is unfit for consumption? If it was only due to disease I would think it would be a little more detailed. Dog/yote damage? Recovery issues? Too many shots though the hams and shoulders? That will need some guidance if it becomes a law. I would assume "IF UNFIT" would be up to your local CO. opinion.

This was basically a mud pit. About 1' deep, that was all muck. Dug out to 8' deep in middle , with slopping sides to banks. Need to finish grade around dam and reseed this spring. Don't think it will dry up, has small spring in it.

Old livestock pond I had cleaned out this past summer. Was an EHD pit, now holds 8' water and a good water source for wildlife.
