I use your basic gloss finished walnut Remington 870 with a smoothbore slug barrel threaded for tubes and a Remington Ventilator turkey choke tube. The factory rifle sights are replaced with Williams Fire Sights. 3" chambered gun, never saw the need for 3 1/2" shoulder busters myself. My longest shot with this combo has been 55 yards. It was a cheap setup, had the gun and barrel for deer hunting but never used it anymore since I switched to handguns.

When you find a horny one without a hen ........
Alarm went off, said the heck with it didn't get up. Sitting on the deck at 9 eating breakfast, turkeys gobbling in my woods. Cloths changed and head out at 9:45. Had a plan to sneak close, getting ready to top a ridge, think I wish they would gobble so I knew where they were and one did. Crap close. Sit down, put face mask on, take sling off gun and get call out. Hit the call one time and set it down. 5 minutes later two toms walk in, one in a full strut. Headed back to house with bird at 10:18. Double beard, one 9" and one about 3". 1" spurs. Lucky ...... yep but I came up with a plan and executed it. I like living where I hunt.

Think that is one reason deer hunting has lost some of its luster with me. Tired of hearing antler size being the main topic of discussion in many groups. Comment I hate when shooting a buck is "That would have been a nice deer in a couple years."

Don't have anything to tear down. This is the second year since I have abandoned tree stands after 35 years of hunting and just hunted on the ground with a tree seat. I kinda like it.

I used IMR 4227 and a 180 grain Hornady XTP. I gave up on that round years ago, shot a lot of deer with, just had other calibers I prefered.

I can't go with less deer where I live at least based on my close encounters driving to work everyday and now having had both vehicles in the body shop. Lot less shots around here this year and I am surrounded by the Hoosier National Forest. I think less hunters as much as anything.

Last one I shot with a 30-06 went 100 yards without a drop of blood. Brother shot one with a .243 that left a wide blood trail. What does this mean ...... you can't judge a caliber by a bloodtrail.

I like Yamaha. Used to have a Honda and Yamaha atv. Yamaha was a better designed machine and caused me less problems. Sold them and bought a Honda utv. They are just not designed as well in my opinion. Thinking about selling it and buying a Yamaha. Won't go back to a atv, utv is just better for what I do. Lots of other brands, I just don't have any experience with them.

I have shot one from the deck before. Would have shot a buck from the patio door once but he heard the door open. Wife was upstairs sleeping, what an alarm clock that would have been.

Have cattle between the house and the woods. I have observed it for years and would say there is some truth to it.

Anytime I have seen them they were very skittish, one little move by me and they were gone.

I'd kept walking. If that happens it seems like I have better luck just getting to where I am going and settling in. Don't think I have ever shot one doing the stop and stalk but have shot one more than once by just keep on walking.

One of the biggest racks I have seen at the Taxidermist was shot by the Marion County Fairgrounds. Guy hunted little patches of woods. Said you could see them coming from a long way off crossing fields between little patches of woods.

I'd shoot him. A couple years ago I had a big buck visiting my property that I had missed the year before and had seen during bow season. My brother came down opening day of gun season. Walking out the door I said there is a big buck in the woods lately, don't care if you shoot him but make sure it is a good shot. He saw him 10 minutes after legal shooting time but couldn't get a good shot and passed. Wouldn't have cared if it worked out differently and he shot him. I would expect the same if it was his property. Then again I'm not a trophy hunter and don't desire a big buck.

Shoot the doe, generally the fawns won't leave. Continue filling tags at that point if you desire.

Population varies a lot by location. I sometimes think that many that think it is down live in the city. Deer sightings in my area are crazy high like I have not seen for 9 years before ehd hit hard. 10 of the last 12 times I have gone to town I have had deer on the side of the road or in the road. Have seen groups of 5 to 10 in the bean fields many times and crossing below the house regularly. Strange part is the time of day doesn't seem to matter. Unfortunately it means that it is probably just a matter of time before a vehicle has to go to the body shop, have had to many close calls over the last couple months, probability eventually kicks you in the butt.

I switched to spitfire some years ago with a compound and had poorer penetration and lost a couple with good hits. Switched to a crossbow and stuck with the spitfire because the poi was same as field points. Lost a deer with a good hit first day out. Switched back to the good old thunderheads and adjusted the scope. Haven't lost a deer or had poor penetration from a good hit since. Lots seem to love them spitfire but I will stick with the durable good performing thunderheads. They are cheaper especially when you consider the arrows I lost because of poor penetration that led to a broken arrow on more than one occasion because of a broken arrow at the first tree a deer ran by with the arrow sticking out.
To the original question, marketing hype in my opinion, they all seem to be the same whether they say crossbow or not.

I haven't used any crop depradation permits for about 5 years. The first year I did you had to keep the deer and turn in the rack. Second year you just had to dispose of the deer and you could keep the rack. Not sure how it is now. I passed a huge buck one summer and never saw him in season. I don't have a problem with the permits but then again I have had deer running in front of the truck about every day the last few weeks. Your opinion could be based on where you live. Then again I am not a trophy hunter and get tired of hearing all that stuff. I am just a deer hunter.
