Glad I got out even though it was windy and didn't see many. Please add 2 more for Team 1. Also got one of those elusive long-ear briar squirrels, but alas, they don't count. 😄 Personal total is now 46. Well,I'll be, I didn't even think about the long ears being in season yet. I'm still real old school on those thinking they don't come in until the 8th. As you can tell, I don't hunt them this early, I have to wait until January after all the deer seasons are over with since my neighbor don't allow any hunting while it's going on and my beagles always wind up down there.

While we were down in Indiana my little cousin took my nephew hunting. First fox squirrel he has ever seen. He had a blast while we were down there. It's nice to see another youngster getting into hunting, he's hooked now .

Super easy to download Tapatalk to your phone and post any pic directly in the Tapatalk app. Tapatalk does seem to have a preference for landscape-view photos though. Occasionally the portrait-view uploads sideways. Tried just now to put the photo in via my computer but even drastically downsizing it doesn't work. I keep getting the message that the file is too large (more than 1 megabyte). That's why I don't like uploading images from my old Android phone! It has NEVER worked for me. I can upload images taken through my own camera without doing a whole lot to them, but the forums I am on don't seem to like Android images period. The picture I posted I tried to upload on the computer too and couldn't get it to work. I tried it on Tapatalk and it worked just great, I have an Android phone too.

Which 1 out of the four are you referring too? The first one didn't fall, it climbed down the backside of the tree. The 2nd and 3rd ones I marked mentally but then lost my bearings after the other one started circling me. The last one I was too far away to mark mentally, just had a general idea, that's why I said I should've just never shot at that one. I had a bad day all the way around, Been a few days since I have been on the forum. Probably the last one. Oh, well it's hard to mentally mark it when it's a long shot and you only know the general area where it landed. That's why I said I probably shouldn't have shot at it.

Finally gonna hit the woods Sunday morning. The busy schedule, and of course weather, has put the kibosh on hunting so far. I put together a new skurry/varmint gun. One I have always wanted to do. It's a 22 Hornet, in another Encore setup that I love so well. Super excited to have a super versatile 22cal centerfire. The draw for me is hand loading, and ability to tune the load, and very frugal on powder charge. Its using only 9gr of powder, and a 50gr hp bullet. The book speed is around 2,100-2,200fps, so basically a warm 22mag load. I only tried 3 loads, and hit the sweet spot right away. It's under an inch at 65yd, so plenty good enough for head/neck shots at normal to long ranges. I'll fine tune further when the leaves start to fall. Sweet. I've got 2 G2 Contenders, 1 I use with rifle barrels and 1 for pistol barrels. I use to have just 1 and switched the barrels back and forth but decided after several years to get another. I haven't used either in years though since I don't deer hunt anymore and prefer the 22 rifle now for squirrels since I'm a better shot with it.

I had a similar experience trying to find one of the squirrels I shot this last week. When I shot, I watched him fall and hit the ground like a brick. Where he fell is pretty thick and I bet I spent about 15 minutes looking for him. I ended up doing a grid search back and forth, then up and down until I located him laying right next to a dead limb laying on the ground. He sure was hard to spot. Sometimes it just takes a lot of patience and hope it pays off. Good luck on your next hunt. When it fell did you immediately mentally mark the spot? This helps with narrowing down the area. They were very active this morning where I hunt.I missed the first 1. I went on down farther and shot 1 but as it was falling it grabbed a limb and hung on a few seconds then climbed down the backside of the tree and through the grass it went. I stayed there and checked for another squirrel, saw 1 shot and it dropped with a thud. I looked around up in the tree and saw another 1, shot and it dropped with a thud. I waited a few more minutes and 1 started working through the trees behind me and worked around 180 degrees through them which made me sort of loose my memory of where the 2 I dropped were. I looked around and found 1 but not the other. I went on through the woods and saw 1 a ways off but knew I couldn't get closer without it seeing me so I shot and it dropped with a thud but when I got over there I couldn't find it either. I saw several others I never got a shot at because they kept moving. So I shot 4, am sure 3 are dead but only came home with 1. Sorry for the rambling but anyway add 1 to team 1. I'll try it again next week after the heatwave moves through. Did you make sure to follow up on the first one? When they do that it's best to follow up as quickly as possible. Since I just about always don't make a good first shot, I like to follow up quick. I normally do but as well as he was moving I knew it would be rather pointless plus I knew it'd spook the other squirrels up the same tree. People may not agree with my decision at that point but it was mine to make then and it's in the past now.

I sort of did that yesterday but the problem was I wasn't exactly sure on either 1 on the more precise location since I lost my bearings on the 1 and was so far away on the other. My vision problems here lately didn't help I'm sure. I'd been better off not even shooting the last 1. Thanks on the wishes, I hope it goes better too

Add these 5 squirrels to team 3 that decided to participate in the contest this morning . The picture of my rifle is a Remington Sportmaster model 12 that I got with S&H green stamps when I was just a young lad around 60 some years ago. It still gets the job done. [/urlSweet. The good ole days of S&H green stamps.

In the 48 years I've hunted them here I've only seen 1 and gotten 1 gray here in Jay County and I was surprised I saw that 1. Dad told me back when I started it was all fox squirrels around here and that's all I'd ever seen until then. The gray was just a couple years ago. I didn't start hunting squirrels hot and heavy until I got a driver's license. Back in the fall of '88 I didn't see very many grays in Daviess County unless it was on hardwood hills back off the road a ways. A few years ago I did not see many fox squirrels, but the last couple years seems like they have started making a comeback in the woods that I normally hunt. Any time I've hunted Hoosier National Forest in Orange or Lawrence County the only squirrels I saw were grays. It seems to me location and hunting pressure might have something to do with it but I'm not sure. When I lived in town I saw as many grays and black squirrels as I did fox squirrels but out here in the country it's been all fox except that 1. I figure a long time ago there were probably more grays around but they must have all been hunted. I've heard Southern Indiana has a lot of Grays and I know when I lived down in Kentucky they had grays down there too.

Nice! I've been out twice and seen squirrels but the place I hunt right now has fox squirrels off limits due to low population. So only grey's there. Funny. I target fox squirrel when I can so that I can further thin them out. I would much prefer the woods be filled with grays. Actually if I'm not mistaken there could be 5 teams, I thought it was suppose to be 4 members to a team and we have 5. Is that a mistake Woody or did you intend to do that?

Only 4 teams, wow? Looks like there'll be a new champion since the defending champs aren't in it this year

Out of all the game I've hunted the last 48 years the only game I DON'T take head shots on are deer, they've got quicker reflexes than all the others it seems. Vital shots on squirrels damages too much meat for me but that's my choice. Good luck this year. Head shots are a much better percentage of DRT (dead right there), but I don't feel that I lose that much if the only shot I have goes through a front leg. I've had many head shots turn into neck or vitals shots when the squirrel moved as I was breaking the shot. I honestly would be happy with just the back and hind legs off of my squirrels. I, too, will pass on head shots on deer unless they are at 30 yards or closer and it's a doe or button buck. I have taken front shoulder shots on squirrels if that's all I've got. I've never shot at the head on a deer and doubt I ever would. I don't care about antlers so the age or sex wouldn't matter. I did take a neck shot on the big 12 pointer I had mounted though, that's the only shot I had

This guy might not know it yet, but is on the hit list for participating in the squirrel contest. Mmm, he looks mighty tasty
