Momma was still having contractions, so we figured something was up. Show pigs like this one are a different critter than your standard commercial pig. Show pigs are specifically bred for wider shoulders, hips, everything. The size of Momma's birth canal through the pelvis doesn't change however, so it's pretty common for pigs to get stuck, and have to go in and pull them. Especially with gilts, who are first time moms and not as big a sow that's had a few litters. Lucky is right though.

7 have made it so far, just put them on shavings this evening. Weaned them off momma on Sunday, piglets seemed to take it better than momma. 3 of the 4 surviving males have testicular ruptures, so they get a truck ride to the vet next Monday. Hoping that goes smooth.

I was driving from here to Michigan City about 2 weeks ago and took the back roads. I was passing a farm about 10 miles from here and a 40#ish pink piggie tried to cross the road in front of the truck. I used the truck to block it from going across the road and stopped to try and herd it back towards the barn. The farmer was out and I yelled to him if he lost any. He yelled back that he was transferring some from the trailer to the barn and 5 squirted under the trailer and were running around. So I kept herding that one towards him and asked if he greased any of them. LOL
His wife was trying to help but she couldn't move fast enough to get in front of the pigs, so I stayed to help. The temp was in the upper 30's and when I got closer to the farmer it looked like they were chasing them for a while - he was dripping sweat like it was 90°F out. It took about 1/2 hour to get them all rounded up and in the barn. I found out later that evening that this old fat man wasn't used to running and muscles were screaming that hadn't said a word for years.
Where except out in the country could you leave your truck running stopped in the middle of the road, with the drivers door open for 1/2 hour and nobody hopped in it and take off? When I first saw the little piggie trotting towards the road I thought "oh great, this is how wild pigs get started"
I don't think city people would understand.
They are cute! I hope the vet trip today is quiet and uneventful.

Took the 4 males to the vet on Monday, things went pretty well, learned a lot as to how this whole rupture thing works/happens. They are now officially barrows. Other than some swelling, they seem to be doing fine.
