We went grocery shopping the other day and I looked at a roast. It was a eye round roast. I about fell over it was $37 and change it would have been maby 3 meals for us. so I went home and got to figuring just what the value of the meat from the buck I took was. I tried to air on the low side of prices from what I have observed in the past and not over estimate the poundage of the meat I accully got.figured tbone and porter house at $10 ribstake at $7 hamburger at $4 all roasts at $7 round stakes $7 and did not include the heart, tongue or meat I boil off bones I use for bbq or Venice and noodles. I do all butchering my self so no cost there. My figures came up over 8$400. Granted I got a large buck with great body weight but never thought that deer was worth over $400 in equil meat at the store and I got a good hunch my figures are on the low side. I know to some $400 is not a lot but to us that is a good hunk of change and we are so thankful to have the meat. It will give us the opurtunity to eat cuts of meat we would not buy in a store. Do not fret. We EAT GOOD ! I supply a lot hunting and fishing and we buy/ watch for sales or bulk purchases. I hunt because I enjoy it. The meat has just been a bonus. I know after putting these numbers on paper I will look at that deer laying on the ground in front of me just a little differently. I have always look at them with respect and reverence and been thankfull but now I wil be even more thankful for what I recieve from hunting.

I don't look at potential savings since it is a hobby but I get it. We all spend our free time an excess cash on something.
I heard a coworker claim his butcher bill on 1 buck deer was more than $180, capping was an extra $30. Ouch! I quit paying a butcher many years ago. I enjoy butchering my game. And that protien is a great supplement to our grocery bill.

Processing went up $10 this year, so it's $120 to do a deer now. I had 2 does done. Some stew meat, burger, some roasts, butterflied loins, tenderloins whole, steaks. Just for curiosity I weighed the meat - all boneless. They wrap in plastic, then butcher paper. Burger is in 1# packages, steaks 2/package, Butterflies 4/package. I have 108# of meat that I put in the freezer. I figured 2# for paper and plastic, it weighed 110# total.

One deer. 2 nights hotel stay. Cost to get drawn at atterbury. New stuff I had to have... don't want to know the cost per pound. Shot one deer. I don't hunt to save money on meat. Way cheaper to buy a cow. By choice. First deer in probably close to ten years. It's not about the savings for me

My post was just an observation of prices and the value of the meat in the deer and a way to apericiate the hobby of hunting just a little more. Not a dig at anyone. Onebentarrow

And only about a 20 minute ride to atterbury.

I butchered one deer myself and took the other 2 in My brother paid for one deer and I paid for the other. I need to better equip dad's pole barn for this process. We can hang a deer I need to get better at skinning and keeping hair off the meat. I need a better setup for cutting. I felt like I was chasing the deer around while trying to cut. I was alone and didn't have anyone to hold the legs. Learned a little, will buy a little and hopefully get a little better next time.

Same here heck I would've made coffee and dropped you off 🙃 Have you met span870 ...imagine a mix between wet dog, old cope and flat rc cola with a hint of moldy corn flakes. With stories for days. Mostly about how bad 243 is for deer how walkers are inferior to Redbone but blue ticks are the best and just when you think it can't get any worse he starts with stories of band camp when he was 1st chair oboe and how none of the girls respected him....I give it 1 day and you'd move just in case he stumbles back.

The skin around the neck, put a baseball under skin. and tie a rope around baseball under skin. Hook the other end to four wheeler and drive away. Deer skins itself. That or be less red neck than me and put a winch up, bolt im floor and winch deer up.
