“We’re told by the sheriff the hunter had injuries to both his back and legs.”
Back injury could be some serious stuff…

I'll add that also the DNR NRC or whomever would need to institute it consider making it on such hunts illegal to take part unless proper safety equipment is being used. Probably a good thing BUT can that lead to the DNR extending that requirement statewide in the future? You know some of us don’t like being told what to do by the government Never gonna happen unless other states do it also…. Motorcycle riders aren’t required to wear helmets here now. State Parks can set their own hunting rules if needed… they already have on ground blinds and weapons!

The way this country is going I wouldn't put anything in the "never" category. Especially when it comes to government idiocy.

Please explain to me why every time some one does something stupid we want to inact some kind of a law/rule to prevent stupid. I understand regulations that protect the inicent from stupid like speed limits because an idiot puts others in danger I have a steep hill for my yard. I mow it up and down because I know going accross the tractor will tip over but every year some one drives a tractor on a hill and turned it over. Should we make a law agent operating a mower on a hill? Just because you make a law does not stop stupid from breaking it. 99 times out ofi 100 it makes it harder for everyone else and makes what ever more expensive for the non stupid. I would never wish any harm to any one but if you do stupid and get your self killed I have no pity for you. I feel bad for your family for thier loss. If you jack a car and get killed so be it. If you rob a liquor store get shot and die so be it if you drive like an idiot and crash so be it. I only feel for the damage done to others related to your stupidly.
End of rant. Maby

Another thought Mother nature is indescrimet. She does not care She does not protect the stupid. She does not give you a second chance. She will kill you no mater your race, religen,IQ,or statice if you give her a chance. We should take responsibility for our own actions and not expect some one to pass a law to protect us from mother nature or being stupid.
If you play the stupid game and win the prize you win just may not be the prise you want. I think the rant is over

I guess I don't when being compassionate towards others became so offensive.

I guess I don't when being compassionate towards others became so offensive. We all done stupid stuff before …so I tend to cut most people some slack.. So instead of me posting “what a dummy” I post “prayers for a speedy and complete recovery. “

Playing off the “stupid stuff”.
Who on here has NEVER climbed into a treestand without a safety harness on?
Bring an old timer I’ve done it a LOT. My favorite spot when I first started out was just standing on a big oak limb.

I’m 37 and this is my first year using a safety harness. I’ve found recently that pain is more painful and for longer the older I get. Some life lessons can be taught, but some have to be learned the hard way. Terry from New Harmony learned the hard way.

I used to hunt with a single climber platform (no seat) and used a piece of rope around my waist to tether me into the tree. Had I fallen I most likely would’ve been turned upside down and died a horrible death. Now I agree with some that he played a stupid game and is now paying the stupid price. I Feel sorry for the guy and hope he has a full recovery, wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. I do not doubt from now on he will be a safety harness advocate. With that said I also agree with some that we do not need more laws or regulations upon us when it comes to hunting or anything for that matter. It’s a very slippery slope when you start getting into that.

Playing off the “stupid stuff”. Who on here has NEVER climbed into a treestand without a safety harness on? Bring an old timer I’ve done it a LOT. My favorite spot when I first started out was just standing on a big oak limb. I have never. I’ve forgot my harness before and then just hunted from the ground. Started out with that single tether around the waist which was probably more harmful than not having it if you fell. I even have lifelines on all my ladder stands. I’m just not taking that chance.

I imagine that the younger folks in here more than likely used the harness or "safety belt". Since most of our body weight is above the belt no doubt a fall would flip us upside down. Death would come quickly hanging upside down with just a "safety belt".. Us old timers (when we started taking to the trees to hunt) used all kinds of aparatus but seldom any fall protection. As I kid I lived in trees. The woods was our playground. We were all Tarzans...except Dewayne Sanders... he was Cheetah. All that climbing and I only fell once. My hands slipped while swinging on a grapevine. Only thing it did was knock the breath out of me. Some of our homemade stands were death traps. I'm surprised that we made it,

I remember climbing trees as a kid 20-30 maybe even 40 high. I would die if one of my kids did that today. How did we survive? Lol

I hunted from a climber for probably 5 years before I ever wore a harness. The last time before I started wearing one was the time the recoil from my 12-gauge slug gun caused the seat section of my climber to spin 90 degrees from the bottom section. My seat section had the front cross bar, and that's the only thing that saved me. My back came to rest against that bar, and my shotgun was dangling from the sling tangled on my arm.
Today, I still only strap onto the tree at full height in my climber or upon reaching the top of one of my ladder stands. I do not own any lifelines, nor do I shimmy up a tree in my climber while simultaneously attached to the tree.

Yeah. But did you get the deer? My memory is a little foggy 20+ years later, but it seems like we tracked blood and didn't find it. It was a young buck and I was hunting a ridge above standing corn west of Williams. I may have actually slipped and fired at the same time. I can't say 100% that the loss of balance was after the shot.
