What are your thoughts on hunting the wind when it comes to firearms season?? Do you always the right wind for your favorite stand or do you hunt it regardless? With having the capability to reach out further from the immediate surrounding area does that allow you to cheat the wind a little? More people in the woods pushing deer around…are the deer really scent checking everything or just running from danger looking for cover?
I ask because I was looking ahead to the firearms opener and the wind is not ideal for my favorite stand. I have a plan B stand on a different farm that will work for the forecasted wind, but I HATE to not be in my killing tree!!😅

I always hunt the wind. My opinion is that all that target buck has to do is peg you in your stand once, and it will be a very long time before he comes by again.

I hunt the winds for all hunting seasons. Starting tomorrow with the cooler weather I will let all does pass upwind hoping a buck is following the does. I don't want to spook any does.

My opinion is that one should make an educated guess on where deer will be in relation to the stand location and hunt said stand only when the wind is not blowing from the stand to the deer.
That said, deer don't always follow the script and can very well be anywhere they darn well choose and not necessarily where you think they will be. Does that make any sense? Lol!

I think playing the wind is a lot Jess important in the firearm season with deer being busted and pushed.
AND
The same for the rut. In the rut the bucks can come from any direction. I hunt fairly close to some stripper pit spoil banks and during archery season that’s a prime bedding area so expect deer to head that way in the morning and come from that direction in the evening. Rut? All bets are off which way they come from and go to.

Besides deer being wherever they want to be, the wind can be tricky as well. The prevailing wind in my area is from the south this morning, but in the last 15 minutes, I've had leaves blowing past me from every point on the compass. It's hard to choose a stand when the wind changes every few minutes. Believe me, I do try to use the wind to my advantage, but sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind and keep hunting.

Deer will bed down with the wind to it’s back so it smells you from one direction and sees you from the other

I don't worry about the wind as much as I probably should. I just spray down and go.

I always hunt the wind too, but the thought just crossed my mind this morning while day dreaming in the stand. I’m sure I’ll hunt the wind as normal whatever it may be opening morning.

We always start with the prevailing wind. As we know, it changes in an instant. I've been busted many times by a shift. When I used to hunt ag fields exclusively, I wasnt much worried about it. But since my hunting is all woods now and close range, gotta make adjustments as warranted.

I try to hunt the wind, but during firearm season I do use less caution because their normal patterns are usually changed due to pressure and rut activity.

I always hunt the wind. I never want the wind blowing where I expect 90% of the deer to come from. They will smell you 200 yds away in the woods and you will never see them. I will hunt a wind that is not perfect but I do not want it blowing to an aera that I would expect 30 to 50% of the deer to come from. When or if they smell you they will go on alert and be nervous. This makes it harder to make any nessasary movements with out getting pegged and they blow out. I also would rather deal with a calm deer than a deer on high alert.

I always hunt with the wind blowing my scent away from where the deer are expected to come from. Or on a cross wind. One thing I've noticed recently while planning hunts a few days out is how the forecasted wind direction can change in a couple of days. I'd check the weather again in a few days, you may be surprised to find that the forecasted direction has changed.

Shoot, with todays meteorologists and all the high tech gizmos, they cant even get yesterdays weather right. We just wait till we park the truck on location and decide where to hunt.

I try as best I can to hunt the wind, but the farm I hunt makes it hard because the deer will come from any given direction at any time. It only multiplies as the rut gets going.

The ONLY time I don't hunt the wind is a state park reduction hunt.

It never hurts to hunt the wind when you can especially if you’re hunting mature Deer….they don’t get old being dumb.

The ONLY time I don't hunt the wind is a state park reduction hunt. Was thinking same thing, but have been duped a few times there as well by wind. Not much you can do with a 1 or 2 day hunt, and a host of others parading around (MANY with no dignity or respect for others).

I ALWAYS hunt the wind. I've learned my lesson and now abide by it. I've had deer 300 yds away smell me downwind and turn around or spook and run off.

Many things in deer hunting are beyond my control. Wind although can't control, I can use to my advantage , and will not hunt a set if wind is not favorable. Actually set sets with prevailing wind in mind, with most set for prevailing S, SW , but have sets for all 4 wind directions. EAST winds are rare my area , but have two sets just for east winds.
