Completely different afternoon here. Yesterday, I saw deer enter into the field from every different direction, squirrels running all over, turkeys chattering and the sandhill cranes flying like crazy. Cranes are flying today but, not nearly like they were yesterday. Only one squirrel quietly walking through. No turkey chatter and not a single deer so far. Nothing here in Knox County either but some geese flying south...super quiet.

Same for us in the skurry woods today, dead. A drive around the neighborhood tonight produced NO sightings of anything. Jeesh.

Clothes are in the ozone closet getting treated. Getting ready to eat an early lunch before I take a scent free shower. Then I'll be headed out for the final act before that ol' fat heifer start singing!

Deer HUNTING season has ended for me. 0 bullets fired or arrows released. Definitely not a failed season. I had my biggest buck ever at 10 yards with no shot. I watched my 14 year old daughter kill her first deer. I had plenty of hunting time later in the season. I am healthy and happy! Scouting starts on my next free afternoon. It's been great chatting with everyone during the season and a HUGE shout out to Woody for running such a great forum. Good luck to anyone heading out this afternoon.

Definitely feels different today than yesterday. Straight west wind about 12-10 mph. Cooler and more snow on the ground! Let's hope and pray that the deer move this afternoon. A picture of my blind overlooking the uncut beans field I'm watching for the my final hunt of the year.

In my family's best stand for a last sit of the season with the crossbow. I was expecting to walk in and immediately jump one but they're not here this time. Wind heading to my left, so they may show. Ten minutes in and already a fox squirrel nearly pinned me. Nothing else other than a few red-headed woodpeckers calling. We'll see what happens. The wind is ideal for this stand but so far it hasn't been a good evening stand. They bed within 100 yards so I know they are likely up here just hidden. Never mind, wind just shifted. Oh well that will happen. I don't have a call with me so if I see them they either have to be headed my way already or I will have to try and do some bleats. They may or may not listen at this point in the game. The biggest thing is to get them away from the property line 70is yards away.

Nothing so far. Just sandhill cranes and geese flying over. The wind is letting up some. Not much but, a little.

Mixed signal here but good for now on my property. I’ve not hunted much here this year as I’m still “developing” and learning it. Kind of exciting as I sit and dream up my plans for the future on this forest! Sleet/snow thing right now. Just birds and squirrels.

I'm guessing that maybe the last minute blind relocation Friday evening wasn't the best plan. I felt so exposed and really thought it was the best move. With seeing so many deer enter the field from all different directions, I really thought that this standing food source would still be enough to lure them in. Lesson learned for next time.
Still 50 minutes or so left. Things can turn around in just 30 seconds or less. 🤞

Little over half hour left and still no deer. Just a few squirrels and birds.

Had a raccoon lumber across the path beneath me and got about halfway up my tree. Noticed me and made its way back down to the ground.

Well, that's all she wrote. Just after I sent that last message, I had deer start filtering out. 14 total. Just nothing within range.
This has been one of my best seasons ever. No regrets!

Great night to close out. A little before last light I had a fork horn and a spike nosing around the corn stalks across the creek from me some 70-80 yards away!

Well I got skunked. Decided to walk out a bit early and guess what? They did exactly what I thought they would do with the cold wind. They used the valley and I should've been sitting in that stand but decided not to because it's really full of dirt from the squirrels and other animals. Got to the top of the path, looked down to scan the plantation, and saw brown with antlers walking through. It was a nice buck that I think was an 8 pt. He stopped where I couldn't see, but then a bigger buck takes off running away down and to my left. I didn't get a good look at him but he looked wide and like he's a really good one. Then the first took off and I could definitely see that deer was a lot smaller! Then from the base of the path in front of me another white tail waves and heads to the creek. I didn't get a good look at that one either but I didn't see headgear so I think it was a spike that was with the other two. Otherwise, I certainly discovered where I needed to be sitting tonight!

And to rub salt in the wound I just now went out to start my truck and there’s 2 deer in my back field and one’s a small buck. Yeah. The same field where this year we didn’t see any deer in daylight and in years past we always see deer. Good grief.
