I just added another one to the count this morning. I shot a nice Tom at 35 yards with a Mossberg 12ga with a Carlson turkey choke and loaded with Remington 3" Nitro Magnum #4 shot Tipped the scales at just over 14lbs. 1-1/8" spurs and a 10" beard. This was my first turkey, and I couldn't be happier. Congrats! Seems like a very light weight though for good spurs and long beard? Felt a lot heavier carrying it out I weighed it on my deer scale that goes to 350lbs. I think it was a lot heavier.

Doesn’t seem the license increases have slowed anyone….

I have seen more out of state hunters in my areas this year. I saw trucks from Mississipi, Georgia, Virginia and several others I could not get a good look at. Our season opens a little later than most so they can hunt opening week here.

Our season opens a little later than most so they can hunt opening week here. I'll second that......Where I'm at there are about 900 acres of state forest starting about 20 yards out the back door and another 1000 acres across the road. This year I've seen 2 sets of KY hunters and one from GA and one from OH. 2-3 weeks before the season on different occassions there might be 5-10 toms. That got alot of people's attention. I hunt these areas as well as 200 acre private farm (I am very fortunate). Knock on wood but never had a deer or turkey ran off by others (that I know of). It just goes with the territory, a big plus knowing they'll be no neighbors but also at times several hunters but it's their right.....public ground. I try to get as far back as I can. We get several out of state folks come deer season too.

Perry county is closing in on 400 birds already. 318 total was harvested last yr and we will only be 1 week into the season come tomorrow. I contribute to the jump in harvest due to 2 yrs ago we had the 17yr Brood X cicada hatch. There was so much easy food for the poults to eat. Also I heard that coyotes and foxes eat cicadas too so there belly was full and did not need to hunt down turkeys for food, which these are major turkey predators. We also had a good hatch last yr with a mild spring and not much flooding. Next yr should be a good year as well but I don't think we will top this year.

Personally… I believe the last few mild Winters is the biggest factor IMO.

I would love to know Alabama's true harvest report. State says they think only 1/4 of people check in birds. They have 4 bird limit. 16,421 reported last year?

You can use a scale like that, but you need to add in an object of known weight. Say you have a couple 25 Lb weights lying around. Hook them to the scale and note the weight value. Obviously it should be around 50 lb, but may be off a few lbs one way or the other. Then add the turkey to the scale with the weights still attached and note this weight value. Subtract the "weights only"' value from the "weights plus turkey" value and you'll have an accurate measurement of your turkey's weight.
I do the same thing when traveling to determine whether my suitcase is over weight. Get on the scale to get my weight, then pick up the suitcase to get my weight plus the suitcase, then subtract the two numbers to get the weight of the suitcase.

Just get a cheap digital fish scale to use. Attach an old shoe lace on it and then the other end to the turkey. Works like a charm.
