If I had the access to vines I may have used those instead or in addition to my ropes.

I like the idea of the putting the camera a little higher. I had actually tried that once. I had my trail cam on a branch next to the seat in my deer stand. It took good pictures but, I think that was a little too high. I'm trying to get away from using straps on my cameras and just going with the screw in tree mounts or the camera stands.
If my ropes don't perform that well, then I'll search harder for some vines to use. I know there are vines in the sanctuary but, we never step foot in there unless we are tracking a deer. I know it has been at least 5 years since I had gone in there after a deer and I do recall seeing vines.

I've been hanging 1.5-2" jute ropes for three years. Yes, they work will, but get them out before July each year. They ropes don't last long if you leave them out over winter. I have not tried nylon ropes, only natural ropes.

Never tried the rope. I’ve got vines up, they seem to work somewhat. But I also have tons of vines in the trees anyways. Wonder if something different would work better in my area…..

Did you ever think to just make your scrape under the low hanging birch limbs like the real deer do?

Did you ever think to just make your scrape under the low hanging birch limbs like the real deer do? Yes, I have tried mock scrapes before and I don't have a whole lot of success. Definitely not as much as I have had with these ropes.

Just my experience , but majority of daytime activity on scrapes is by young bucks 1.5 to 3.5 year old's. Rarely see mature bucks visit during daylight, only at night. Have had some luck , making mock scrapes near other scrapes, seems to anger other bucks in area, who normally take them over in short order. Majority of my success has been hunting travel corridor's between bedding areas, especially downwind sides of heavy bedding cover. Bucks like to cruise those areas trying to catch scent of a hot doe. When making mock scrapes, I always place them where there is a overhead branch or vine to use as a licking branch. Seems like ropes would work , where overhead branch not available.

Never seen a real deer carrying around rope or tying rope up a tree to swing on it or chew it. How would they tie with out thumbs?

Never seen a real deer carrying around rope or tying rope up a tree to swing on it or chew it. How would they tie with out thumbs? I’ve never seen a deer plant a tree that they would eventually make a scrape under either, but they use them!! It’s irrelevant whether the deer uses a tree branch, dangling vine or a rope…they all work. By using a rope you can make the mock scrape anywhere you choose as long as there’s something to tie the rope to. Making strategically located mock scrapes and then hanging a camera over it gives the hunter a lot of good info throughout the season. I make them strictly to hang cameras on…not to hunt over.
