Oh NO! My condolences. I hope you can find out what the issue was, if just for information for the future.

Thanks guys, not the outcome I expected. We did have a stillborn litter last year, but we got rid of that pig. This pig that does was the one that had a successful litter last year. Eclampsia is as good a guess as any, I doubt I run it past the vet, he’s impossible to catch up with. I will talk with my buddy that does this for a living and see what he thinks. He’s just crazy busy right now with his commercial sow job and 20 or so of his own show pigs farrowing.

This eclampsia thing seems as likely as anything. Doesn't hurt to ask, thanks Esshup.

I know I don't know how to do that, but I also understand that there wasn't anything to lose at that point too. I am sure that the vet would have taken quite some time to get there to do any good. Plus, then there is the prospect of a bunch of pigs to figure out how to bottle feed for the next 2-3 weeks. I'm sure that's been done, but that would be more than a lot. I've also heard of surrogate nursing sows, but not sure who I could count on for anything like that. On top of all that, I was in a little bit of shock, maybe not making the best decisions right then.

For only having one sow, unless you were willing to spend the next 3 weeks getting sleep in 2-3 hour increments, you did the best thing. Remember, no matter how hard we try, Mother Nature still has the last word.

Yes I would agree with mother nature. She has her own ways.

The retired pig farmer had no idea what caused it, but he did say she looked to be in great shape. He was baffled.

Well, my friend asked if I could take one of his sows to finish. He knew I was bored and didn’t have any going. So, this evening I picked up this hamp cross, he doesn’t even know exactly when she’s due. I’m just glad to get more experience, and also glad to have something to do other than work and basketball/volleyball games. She can go anytime. Seems like a good sow, she’s played this game before he says.

Peggy the pig got crated this afternoon, she’s close. Started milking, bags full, and started trying to make a nest too. Not my pig, but fun all the same, glad to have her for the experience. Hopefully she goes better than the last go round.
