My wife has a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The last two days in a row when has tried to start it the first few times only the lights and stuff come on and nothing else. It eventually starts. Would that be an ignition or alternator issue? Battery is less than a year old.

I would vote not alternator.

If it's not clicking or cranking, likely in starting circuit. Could be loose or corroded connection at starter or battery, starter, starter solenoid or relay, or neutral safety switch. Still should have battery load tested. One year old doesnt mean anything. A lot going on to armchair quarterback a diagnosis.

I start by making sure your battery connection is good and tight and not corroded…. Especially being a battery was installed not long ago.

I use it sometimes because it's mostly my wifes key and has the key fob. The battery cables were not that tight. I just tightened them up. I'm hoping that was the problem.

If that's not it, you might try looking at the starter next. My truck was doing the exact same thing for half of last year. Maybe turn the key 4-5 times before it would crank. Otherwise, no clicking or anything when turning the key. I went so far as to run a new ground to it and that "fixed" it for about 2 months and it started again. At that point, I took the starter off and had it tested...bad starter the whole time. No clue why it worked fine for the first 2 months of having the new ground wire.

Remove, clean, reinstall and coat with anti corrosive.
I have anti seize so that is what I use.

Update on the stupid car. Yesterday I tried to start it and nothing, absolutely nothing, not even dash lights. I jumped it and got it going. Drove to Wal-Mart since that is where the battery is from and had them test it. Was told it all checks out good including alternator. Today I just went out to start it and it started right up.

That eliminates a few things at least. Now need to look at the battery cable connections at the starter and ground as well as other places like where the main power distribution panel receives power. I get that your just trying to save a buck, but an experienced eye could go a long way. No offense against Walmart, but some of those guys were probably stock boys last week.

Yeah check where ground cable that comes off battery runs to and make sure it connected good there also.

One easy thing to try since it seems to be intermittent. Jiggle the shifter and try to start it. There's a neutral switch in there that can sometimes go bad. You could also take it to an auto parts store and see if any trouble codes pop up. What are some of the Hyundai inhibitor switch recalls

I've had a battery test good that was still bad, but that doesn't sound like your problem. I would suspect starter solenoid. Sometimes they are with the starter and sometimes they are separate.

Quit guessing, take it to reputable auto repair shop and have them plug it into a computer and see if flashes any codes.

Dump it in the river. Once you lose confidence it is all over.
