Thes dumb things are in our front yard. We live in the middle of a 40 acre woods. I hear they’re called rib-eye from the sky. I like rib-eye. Getting tempting, just sayin.

Encouraging to see.

Last evening, just before pulling another all-nighter at a Northside Indy plant, I caught something out of the corner of my eye as I was in my truck waiting for personnel to arrive. It seemed to be a bit out of the ordinary in the nearby retention pond. On closer examination, it was a pair of Hooded Mergansers. Not the best pics due to the distance but they were cool to watch for a few minutes:

There's 2 ducks on my pond don't know what kind. The male has a red and white head and the feathers stand up and back. I can't find a picture of them online.

Since 1992 I have had two blue bird boxes each right at 120 yards away with my house in the middle. Most years both are used and two nests per year. Sometimes three per year. This year with early spring weather it might be a three-nest year.

Before heading home from Terre Haute today, I stopped at the JJ Case Wetlands just a bit northeast of Rose Hulman. I grabbed my binoculars and took a walk. To my surprise, I got some cool pics of the American White Pelicans. I think it's cool to watch the flock as they group up and forage for fish and other aquatics by concentrating and flapping to a shallower pool. And I got my eyes on two different pairs of wood ducks. Got a lone pic here:

For anyone interested, check out and grab the Merlin app. You can use sound recordings and photo ID to assist in identifying birds. Set up an account and you will track your birds with your “life list.” It’s not perfect. Not foolproof. But it’s pretty good and it’s free! merlin.allaboutbirds.org/I just downloaded the app. Pretty fun way to bird. I never figured I could distinguish the little birds but this helps! Wasting time picking out birds by the song...pretty cool

Currently, I am picking up a lot of warblers as they are migrating back north. I didn’t even know what a warbler was until I starting using this app!

I haven't been able to get a decent picture, but I have an almost albino Robin in the back yard. It's got some grey feathers on it's head, but other than that it's all white.

My wife, grandson and I did a quick trip to North Carolina over the holiday weekend. As much as I would like to tap in here during our trips, I have decided that I will discontinue that practice. We have had 2 families from our church get their houses broken into and it has all been from the families posting their vacations on social media! This little journey was to allow my grandson to play the NC State golf course with my B-I-L and then Tyler and I took another day to meet the founder of the Sylvan Heights Bird Park, Mike Lubbock. He was referred by one of my old Genetics professors at Purdue. For decades, Mike's focus has been to develop this conservation program, primarily as a breeding center to raise endangered waterfowl species from around the world at this facility located in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. The link to the park is www.shwpark.com/I rented a 150-600mm Sports zoom lens to pair with Tyler's Sony A73 camera to get some good pics. We had some rain but that turned into some even better pics. Here is Tyler practicing on shore birds along the Kanawha River near Charleston WV: Me chatting with the British founder, Mike Lubbock: And here is one of the pics, a Temminck's Tragopan, primarily found in the mountains of India: Some of the shots that Tyler took are simply amazing. I was fascinated at the detail and clarity from the photos. I will add a few more pics later. The photos are taking forever to download!

Here are a few more photos. The White winged duck. One of the rarest ducks on the planet from Vietnam, almost wiped out by Agent Orange: The Cape Teal, a non-migratory African duck, shot in the rain: The European Avocet with the funkiest of a sideways curved bill: The Victoria Crowned Pigeon from the New Guinea region: and the Demoiselle Crane, flying as high as 26,000 feet to cross the Himalayas during migration:

I snapped a shot of this dude today at Fowler's Park, south of Terre Haute. The bird was quiet. So, Merlin's sound recording would not pick it up. My phone went dead so I'll have to see if I can ID it later.
