I'm not Napoleon but I can't see what the Russians are trying to do in the Capitol.
You spend months letting them know you are coming This to some extent was unavoidable, I suppose, but I still think that a surprise attack that would have taken out the leadership and command & control would have been better. Now you have this long period where the Ukrainians, if they had any sense, have positioned those Javelin missiles, ammo, and other supplies all over the Kyiv. ( I understand they also have a pretty good home-grown anti-tank weapon ).
The Russians still have not totally encircled the city. Determined defenders can hold out for for a long time with no supplies, and you leave it open? The Russians are going to need most if not all the troops they have brought just for Kyiv, especially since it seems they are not willing to just level the place ( thank God). Thinking that a handful of special forces is going to secure a major urban setting is pure fantasy.
The internet is still up. The Rooskies haven't killed the internet, in spite of it being largely controlled by Russian companies. So now you have house to house fighting. How long until footage of women and children being gunned down while shooting back at Russian troops comes out? The defenders are using the internet to rally support, communicate, etc. The only thing I can think of is that the Russians hope to track and eliminate the defenders when they use it, but still. What is to keep the home team from using it to feed the Russians false info and even lay traps?
What are they trying to do here? If they finally have enough and bomb the **** out of the place, then even China will probably throw their hands up and any hopes they have of excusing this mess will evaporate. If they continue the house to house approach, we all know how long that can take and how bad it can get. Meanwhile, the rest of the country is a whole 'nother very large ball of wax.
Personally, I'm hoping some more pragmatic strongman will take this opportunity to emerge from the shadows and "retire" Mr. Putin. A long shot I know.
