I work in a truck shop servicing and repairing semi trucks and trailers. It gets pretty harsh in the summer heat, but even more so in the winter cold. I have to run all the road calls on 2nd shift, because my worker/partner got a dui and our insurance does not allow him to operate company equipment on the road for 5yrs. So I get to enjoy EVERY call by myself no matter what. The last couple of weeks have been tough with the brutal temps, many nights out at zero deg or close, and sub zero windchills, and snowstorms. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by my Christmas bonus, as it was more than a two week paycheck! Then just this week, I found out we were getting another dollar raise for night shift. So that makes a total of $4.75/hr I have personally got in raises since our new company bought out the old in Oct 2019. I feel I am finally making the kind of money I deserve for all my efforts. Yay

Finding quality people that want to work and care about their job is next to impossible now. Heck, getting an applicant is hard enough! So they really have no choice but to do whatever it takes to preserve the few they do have by sweetening the pot. As I've stated before tho, one or a few guys can only do so much before they get burnt out, or fatigued, and I'm getting there! We have been hammered so much, and then the onslaught of harsh weather has really taken its toll. The last couple weeks has been work, sleep, work, sleep, repeat. Basically praying for the weekends to get here to try and recuperate and recover some. Doing my best to keep the cart upright!

It's hard to stay motivated at work when you are surrounded by people that DGAF. At least the company is trying to retain it's people, but at the same time they need to start enforcing the attendance policy.
My next door neighbor works as a hiring guru. So, she knows all too well the problem today with hiring good help. She was tasked with looking at ways to get and retain people where she worked and she ran across a place in Indy that was hiring and was looking for someone like her. She was halfway looking to switch because the manager was a constant micro manager.
She went for an interview, and things really went well. About a 25% increase in pay, new company contributes 8% to the 401K, (not 8% of what you contribute, it's 8% of your pay), 5 weeks of paid time off to be used anyway you want (vacation, sick time, etc) plus I believe 13 holidays. She's an hour and 45 minutes from her job. She has to be there 2 days a week, the rest of the time she can work from home. What 2 days a week is flexible. Oh yeah, company pays 100% of the health care and it kicks in on the first day of work. Her husband leaves for work at 5am, so she leaves the same time as he does to drive down, and spends 1 night a week in a hotel there. She leaves there at 3pm and is home by 5 on the 2nd work day down there.
She went to her boss and said if they'd match it she'd stay. Nope. they wouldn't match it, so she turned in her 2 week notice, which ended 3 days before they were supposed to go on a week long vacation.
The NEW company even told her that if her old company showed her the door, they'd pay her for those 2 weeks and she could physically start when she got back from vacation.
SO, there are places out there that want to get and retain good people, you just gotta look.

I got my work ethic from both my mom and dad. Luke is pretty inquisitive in asking a lot about work. I stress the importance of a good job and most importantly good attendance and attitude. I kid him all the time if I dont get in the car on time it would leave without me. Lol

Prime example this week of earning every dollar. My worker/partner was off Monday, Wed, and Thurs, I did have our new cleaning kid (hopeful apprentice) here half the shift Mon and Tues, then he was off rest of week. His attendance sucks so he probably wont make it. So I worked a truck shop all by myself 3 days, fending off everything they threw at me. Luckily no road calls with the bad weather.

I work for the federal government, so it’s not hard to be above and beyond others.

I worked for our city garage for a couple years when I started wrenching, and yes, not hard to get ahead of the pack. Please hear this!!! I am NOT saying, stating, thinking, or leading on I am the best employee, fastest, smartest, etc. But, I am there every day, no matter the workload, job, weather condition, etc, and come with a good attitude and willingness to keep the customer rolling. That is all I'm getting at!

Starting pay in South Bend is $34/hour for mechanics. Medical, Dental and vision is $200/pay period for a family, IIRC out of pocket per year is <$1,000.00. Medical starts Day 1, no waiting time. Company contributes 8% of your pay rate to your 401K, they pay and send you to any schooling you want/need and you get paid while at class. All the holidays (I think it's on par with the government employees). Paid time off from the get-go is 5 weeks, you don't have to be there years and years to get that.
My neighbor works for them in HR, she works out of the Indianapolis office but lives up here. She works from home 3-5 days of the week.
They aren't having a hard time finding people, but they have an aggressive growth plan so they are looking to hire over 200 here in Indiana alone.
