I'm 47 years old. I've been spotlighting deer since I was old enough to drive. It is still one of my favorite past times. I enjoy putting some good music on and hitting the back roads with the spotlight. I use it mainly as a tool to take an inventory of the herd in my area. But, obviously, I also use it to see big bucks because it's fun to find them. You can't determine your inventory based on one or two outings. It takes several nights of shining to get an accurate idea of the herd size. In all honesty, it would really suck for the law abiders to have this taken away from us. In all honesty, for the huge majority it is good innocent fun. But, I do agree, shining someone's home is a big no-no. Unfortunately, it does happen by accident though.

Span, I hunt public, and have no huntable ground as well. You are right Whitetail Dave and Greg Hopper, it would keep an honest man honest but the "no weapons" rule should do the same making the entire act illegal may not solve the poaching issue but I think it would help. I just don't really see a need for it but to each their own. If no one ever poached a deer while spotlighting I probably wouldn't be against it as long as it was done respectively. It's still a fine line in my opinion though. I say if you want to spotlight your ground go for it. I'm just not a fan of the practice.
I see no problem driving roads at dusk though, my wife and I used to do that when we were dating, we'd grab an ice cream from DQ and ride around looking for deer. You may scoff and say what's the difference? Well, the spotlight is the difference.

Last night legal light wasn't even up and a couple of idiots in a jalopy spooked the deer that were running around next to me. There were bucks so they kept turning around and coming back as I walked out. They could at least wait until its good and dark.

The completely legal light operator from last week came back last night. He stopped on the road (not trespassing) angled his truck to shine both headlights on the front of the cabin, and proceeded to sit there windows down and radio blaring.

Spotlight with a weapon = illegal Shoot animals on other's property = illegal Shoot from road = illegal Trespassing = illegal Wanton waste = illegal Shining a flashlight or spot light into peoples houses = illegal
Yeah making another rule to break will slow down the poachers or looky-lews.

Not arguing with your logic, but if shining the light itself from the road was illegal then it wouldn't be so hard to catch the ones shooting, or possessing a gun, or shining windows.

Does my neighbor killing a giant deer make the spotlighting worse or do they give up since it's gone? Green score over 200.

I have a Martian that asked me about bringing his pet deer out. With the traffic I saw on the way out of the woods tonight (dudes standing outside the truck and bailed when the saw me) I'm thinking the pet deer is a good idea.

Had a spotlighter come through the farm last night, passenger was sitting on window sill of door shining light over the roof of the car going 30mph.... Not very smart, when a deer could easily jump in front of the car.

Apparently the quickest way to stop the spotlighting parade is post pictures of the deer they were looking for dead. Seems that deer had a summer home about 3 miles away (on camera the last 3 years) and he disappeared. The parade was out looking for him when he quit showing up in the nightly field illumination at the summer home.

It would be neat to see a deer like that on the hoof. On the other hand if the spotlighting people had bad intentions how in the world did they expect to get away with it? You don't shoot a deer like that and keep it quiet for too long.
