Glad to see you made the move successfully, and congrats on the new house! If your archery skills aren't up to par for this first season, crossbows are legal and you don't need much practice. Gun season is in November, and while it's a bit confusing due to different calibers being legal for public vs. private ground, that is an option too, as well as muzzleloading. You can use a muzzleloader during regular gun season.

I'll do firearm season if I can find a place with low foot traffic, but based on what I've read it gets crazy up here on public lands (which is why I wanted to bow hunt instead) Is stalking with a bow a viable tactic or am I just going to spook the deer? Back in CA we'd only do stalk hunting so I don't really know how to hunt in a blind or in a tree stand. I was hoping I could just spot something and stalk up to it for a bow shot.

You would have to be careful you didn't walk into someone's hunting spot.

Stalking is much harder on whitetails than Mule deer or blacktails.

Ahhh I see, well I guess I better read up on where to stay put.
Will a ground blind work?

Ground blinds work, but treestands work better, think of it as someone putting a new ottoman in your living room. How fast would you notice? But would you notice if someone was hanging from the ceiling? Probably not as fast.....

Tylerprime, pm me so we can get phone nos and talk on the phone. I am open minded on how some one hunts but I will give you my thoughts and proseses on how I go about my setups and hunting strategies. I have hunted treestands and ground blind. Each has their place with pros and cons.

Apologies for being absent. Moving to Indiana has been an adventure for sure. I just purchased a crossbow that will be delivered in about a week. Still need to purchase my deer tags but I've seen good signs on my 5 acre property from the trail cams: Deer Cam PicturesI'll be in my blind after the next week or so. Hopefully I get lucky. Thanks everyone for their input once again!

Something no one else has mentioned is the Pigeon River Fish & Wildlife Area. From downtown Valparaiso it is about a 2 hour drive and a tad over 100 miles. Pigeon River Fish & Wildlife Area is dedicated to providing quality outdoor recreational opportunities while maintaining 11,794 acres of land, 529 acres of lakes and impoundments and 17 miles of free flowing river. While I don’t spend anytime gun hunting there, it is one of my favorite places to bow hunt.
