The only thing I`ll be more anxious waiting for than next deer season is possibly, wild turkey season in Indiana. I have a great buddy who has graciously taken me onto property he has access to the last several turkey seasons, and the hunting has been wonderful. I`ve made memories that will never leave me, culminating with last seasons last minute hunt.
Last weekend of turkey season, Clint set up just behind me at the edge of a crop field, tucked inside the treeline, with 2 hen decoys 20 yards out in front of us. Over the course of the 90 minutes we sat there, we heard multiple gobblers respond to the purrs, yelps and clucks off his slate and the diaphram. Finally I heard him whisper "Don't move". He saw what was blocked from my view by the contour in the middle of the field where it rose in front of me. A bird was coming across the field straight to us, and when he topped the contour of the hump between us, he immediately spied the hen decoys, and even though "just" a jake, he puffed up and fanned out, spitting and drumming as he walked right in between the decoys in what seemed like slow-motion. When he pirouetted and slowly walked back between the decoys, I got my sights on him, and when he turned back towards us, his head tucked down, notched tail-fan swaying in the breeze, I dropped him in his tracks at 22 yards. What a hunt!
So, after I do further recon at my favorite deer woods, it will be on to getting the striker calls ready for turkey season, and waiting semi-patiently for that late April season opener.

Turkey season has added a new found love in my life about 8yrs ago. I drug my feet getting into it, but my buddy showed me the ropes and started me off right. Boy was it great! I have been blessed with excellent spots, friends, and now have great passion. It is addicting!

As much as I love deer hunting, it's great to get out in the spring when everything is greening up, and especially to not have worry with all the scent free and descending stuff. That part of it gets a little tiring to me. And how great to hear a thundering gobble and see a bird coming across a field.

Um, turkey season is open now - closes Jan 5th, so you guys don't have to wa howit until the Spring! Yeah, I'm talking spring season, when Tom's are cruising, looking for a date. I have to guess most turkeys killed during fall/winter are killed incidental to other hunting pursuits. I know how to call them in, in the spring, wouldn't have a clue how to hunt them now. That and, I want warm weather.

That and, I want warm weather. Was gonna say same reasons. Fun to call them in. As for fall, got to get them on a known travel path. I am gonna try another time or two still. See a lot of tracks in the sandy soil going thru our food plot. Never see them when deer hunting tho. Just got to wait them out and hope its when your in the woods.

I took advantage of the nice weather (once the rain moved out about 2) and did some scouting. I know the turkey flocks will break up and patterns will change but, I still looked for some roost trees, droppings, feathers, etc. I cleared off an old logging lane near some roost trees I found. I think it'll be awesome to see some old deep woods gobbler come strutting and gobbling down that lane. I build a natural ground blind as well. Hopefully they'll like that lane and get use to using it and passing by that ground blind.
I still need to pattern my new turkey gun. I'd like to add a half strut Jake to my decoy collection too. Just a little over three months away! Lol!

I've never been able to master a diaphragm call, but might try again, even though I may have to find a new place to live after I start practicing.

My wife has suggested several times on where I should place mine! Lol! I'm not very good with a mouth call either.

Just changed my rifled barrel out for my turkey barrel. I need a 22" winchoke. This 28" is just ridiculous. Lol.
