Being native he gets to rifle hunt on the rez from early september until mid December. He has been guarding his rez tag for a buck, filled his state bow tag with a doe. I knew there was a new clear cut a few miles down the road so about mid-day I went to scout it out. 8 point was browsing with a few does so I called Darwin and told him to grab his rifle. He hiked up to the top of a hill and peaked into a ravine, got his buck with a 150yrd shot. He called me for help and was on his knees shaking when I got there, his best buck to date. Sure makes me smile seeing people get shook up like that, I sure miss the feeling. Should have seen his facial expression when he pulled a antler off on the drag, then the second!!! Pour guy, I told him I would reattach when I do his european.

LOL great deer! Tell him congratulations for me.
I like the dark horns, not the white ones we have here from eating the beans. Same thing happened to my cousin in Wi a while back. They had to call the DNR officer out before they took it in to the check station - no doe permits that year. He was OK, the officer saw that they fitted that deer so they didn't get in trouble.

I never knew diet was a factor in horn color. I just figured it was from the sap of whatever tree they were rubbing on. Lots of conifer tree's here. When doing Europeans for people I will clean blood off the antlers and must be careful, to much cleaning with a wet rag and the antlers will almost turn white.

That's what I heard, dunno if it's true or not, but I never see dark horns around here in agriculture country.
