Well... as of right now I’ve got plans to hunt some velvet Sitka Black-Tail on Baranof Island near Sitka, AK. One of the new shooters on our team runs a guide service up there and I’m considering going up next summer as a deckhand on fishing charters. Sitka’s aren’t the biggest deer by any means but I can’t say I’ve ever been this excited for a hunt in my life. Also here’s the outfitter- alaskaboathunts.com/

That does look like a great time!
I assume you're getting a free or steeply reduced rate because of your buddy. I looked at the prices, yikes! $8k for a deer hunt!
If that doesn't work out, POW Island is a very DIY friendly spot for Sitka Blacktail. I'm wanting to do that in the next 2-3 years. It's as easy as flying to Ketchikan, taking a ferry to POW, renting a car and going hunting. Deer are literally everywhere and you can buy up to 3 tags OTC.

Make sure you keep your head on a swivel, a lot of BIG bears up there.

Yeah haha, we’re going off the record for a deer hunt 🤣 still won’t be a cheap trip for a college student... and yeah schall that’s definitely one thing that’ll be in the back of my mind. Hopefully the .338 Lapua and .44 can give me some cover.

When shooting on the rifle team in college I used earplugs that allowed me to hear the commands. I had a 20% hearing loss in my left ear because of them not having enough db protection (less than 10 db). Especially if the rifle had a brake on it. I now wear hearing protection when I'm gun hunting, unfortunately, what has been lost hearing wise over the years won't come back, and as some guys on here know, hearing aids aren't the perfect solution and they aren't cheap. Sounds like a great time though, and I'll bet the deckhand job will be a very interesting one. What type of boat, and what are they fishing for?

That’s a very good point and something I’ve personally taken for granted while hunting... I definitely need to get better about that. And they fish for king and silver salmon, halibut, and different types of rock fish. They’ve got a big 80 ft. Boat which they’ve basically made into a yacht.
