We're heading to South Dakota on the kids' fall break this year, leaving Friday 10/11 and returning Saturday 10/19. The plan is to spend one day at Badlands National Park, and the rest of the week throughout the Black Hills. We have a small cabin rented at Custer State Park.
Planned activities include: -Tourist stop/lunch at Wall Drug Store -Badlands visitor center -Badlands Highway 240 driving loop -Light hiking in the badlands -Hiking throughout Black Hills -Trail ride on horses -Wildlife Loop Road at Custer S.P. -Visitor Center at Custer S.P. -Devil's Tower (Wyoming) -Mount Rushmore -Crazy Horse Memorial -Broken Boot underground goldmine tour and gold panning in Deadwood -Walk around downtown Deadwood -Silverado Franklin Grand Buffet restaurant in Deadwood
I'm bringing a cooler full of deer, pronghorn, and elk steak, along with some side items. We plan on cooking most of our breakfasts and suppers at the cabin, and eating quick/easy stuff for lunch while out and about. I do want to eat out at a nice restaurant a time or 2 though.
Wind Cave National Park tours are closed due to elevator issues, otherwise our plans would include a cave tour.
Am I missing anything must-see while we're out there? Any good places to eat in between?
I'm looking forward to this trip as much as I would a hunt, probably more. Hopefully we'll have some good photos to share when we get back.

Down past Mt Rushmoore is a small town that has a train ride that is pretty cool. I cant remember the name right now. The I 80 truck stop has some good food and is cool to see. Dakota Steak House is good.

My brother was just there in Deadwood and said the same thing. They liked the town.

My grandmother's side of the family originates from South Dakota to Wyoming. That's where I get a small percentage of my Native American heritage (Arapaho). I absolutely love the Black Hills. One of my favorite places to ever visit. The Crazy Horse Memorial is pretty awesome too. You'll enjoy your trip for sure! I still have a lot of family in Eureka, SD. Take lots of pictures and please share!

I’ve ridden a motorcycle many times through the Black Hills. My wife and my favorite place is Hill city and we always hit the Alpine Inn!
