Well it's been an eventful time so far. I dont have much signal, but I'll put this out for now. 3 of the 4 of us have taken our pronghorn bucks. Mine amd another fellows are both pushing the 80 inch mark.
Ok I'm finally home, cleaned up, fed, and had about a 4 hour nap. This hunt started last winter when my buddy mentioned that he would like to go out to Wyoming with me on a antelope hunt. What started off as the 2 of us eventually included 2 other guys that I hadn't met, but wound up becoming good friends with. These newbies didn't have a clue as to how the draw process worked so everything fell on me. We sent in for the unit that I drew 2 years ago that took 4 points to draw. We had 1 point amongst the 4 of us for a 1/4 point average. We sent in for 2 other nearby units as our 2nd and 3rd choices and also our doe tags. Much to our surprise we drew our first choice in the random draw. We drew 1 of the 9 random tags.
Fast forward to last Friday, we pulled out of Connersville, IN about 1 pm and had to pick up the 4th guy just southwest of Chicago. We arrived in our unit about 9am Saturday morning. None of the guys had been west of Nebraska so this was all new to them. Being Wyoming we instantly started seeing pronghorn, but were shocked when we seen a heck of a 5x5 bull elk bugling and looking for cows. After making a quick scouting drive through the unit we checked into our cabin, got cleaned up, ate and got geared up for an evening hunt.
Nate was the first to tag an antelope on Saturday evening. Chris tagged out Sunday morning on a good heavy buck. Darius tagged out late Monday on a really wide buck with a double prong on the right side and a bunch of kickers.
Sunday afternoon Darius and I spotted my buck down a 2 track with 10 or 12 does about 1/2 mile off the road. We managed to get with in 200 yards of him but I WHIFFED big time due to the 35 mph wind ( we had a high wind advisory on Sunday with 60 mph gusts). After missing we ate lunch and looked at some more groups of antelope from our position. We decided to try to find the buck again. Well about 2 hours later and 1.5 miles we caught up with him. We used a dry creek bed to sneak up on him and the does. We first spotted him at almost 300 yards but he came to about 248 yards and I dropped him on the spot. I took him with my Savage Axis in 6.5 Creedmore topped with a Vortex 4x12x44 scope and Winchester Whitetail 125 grain bullets. He's right at 15" or so, mass over 6.5", and about 5" prongs. The packout was almost 2 miles out to the truck. I was killed when we finally reached it. I'm tickled and he's going on the wall.
