Sounds like a good time so far! I have the weed sprayer shower set up also, it's surprising how well it works. What are the temps like at that elevation? I'm heading out there Thursday and still debating how much clothes to pack. I just came back froom the Grand Mesa, it was upper 70s during the two days and down into the low 40s/upper 30s when I was there

I don't want to try to sound like I know a lot about elk hunting, because I don't. BUT, every time I've gotten into elk, was because I just marched right in to the bugles. They aren't nearly as wary as a whitetail. If you keep the wind right, you can walk right up to them in thick cover, despite your own noise. That's what we planned on doing but they aren't bugling yet. We talked to other hunters and read posts on Facebook reporting the same thing. Early last week I saw two bulls by themselves. Then later in the week I heard a few bugles at night. I heard one during daylight hours and the herd consisted of a bull pushing around 4-5 cows.

We did an 8 mile loop yesterday. Saw a lot of fresh sign, a natural mineral lick, and several water holes. We found some rock cliffs and waterfalls. We took a bunch of pictures. We found a lot of fresh bear scat. Giant piles of it. We found wet mud on a log where it crossed. I tried loading pictures on Facebook but couldn't get enough service. We didn't find any elk but we did see a mule deer.

We hunted the green valley bottom again tonight. I heard sticks breaking in the pines on the hill above me. A few minutes later I heard my buddy cow calling. What I heard was a 5x5 bull going out into the hillside meadow. He went by my buddy at a little over 100 yards away. He wasn't responding to the calls and kept going into an alder thicket. The wind was wrong for going after him. Muzzleloader season oens in the morning. A bunch of new hunting camps have moved in the last 2 days. I think we are going to load up in the morning and head back to Indiana. I'll have more pictures to post when I get home.

I don't know if you experienced this, but anytime I go on a long hard trip like that, I get to where I miss home very badly and have thoughts about leaving early. Then when I'm home, after a couple days all I can think of is getting back out there again.

Then when I'm home, after a couple days all I can think of is getting back out there again. I had some of this...I had tore up my feet after a few days and could not convince myself to get up out of bed early the next day. Went to town that afternoon and called my wife and told her how crappy I was feeling. She told me she couldn't believe what she was hearing and that I drove all the way out there and was ready to come back. That was all i needed, even after a wet sleeping bag, longer hike due to road conditions, and a slippery hike, to get up early the next morning to make it to my spot. I made it in an hour early than I had the previous day.
