I’ve bought a newer tractor and thinking of buying a flail mower. All I’ve read on them is good things but wanted to hear from a real user, good, bad and ugly?

My only experience is with a 7' wide brush hog. What are you going to be cutting and what hp is the tractor vs. hp required to run the flail you are looking at?

Tractor is 55, pto is 50. Mainly field with 1-2” trees here and there. I’m looking at hammers instead of finish knives.

The one I’m looking at is 78”and has a 65hp gearbox. Chinese made but the Price is right. 35-65 pto hp can run the flail.

I used to run something, maybe a cousin to what you are looking at. It was a skid steer with a mulcher on the front on it. It was a hammer type, not the knife kind you were referencing. It did an pretty good job taking care of things. The only thing is if it was dry out man you would need a dust mask and whenever you were done at the end of the day you could definitely tell where the mask was. It almost seems that the fine debris that it expelled got into every conceivable crevice of the tractor.
Not to mention the air filter. If you don't clean your tractor out regularly you will lose it due to fire. We actually lost 2 skid steers due to fire because our employees weren't doing a good enough job cleaning out the engine compartment and the like. I've also ran a knife version. The plus to it was it kept the fine debris down, the drawback was, if you hit a rock plan on replacing several knives.
Take care what is around you if you decide to go that route cause I've seen chucks of wood shot thru the air and lank 75' away or better. But in any case it will definitely save you time and back aches if you get it. Best of luck to you.

Without knowing what you ran I can’t compare. I got my flail in yesterday and uncrated it. Had to cut welded angle iron to free it. Got it assembled and added gear oil to the gear box and greased all the zerts. Looks heavy duty and weighs 850 pounds. I’ll try it out next week when I’m at my property.

Tried the flail mower out yesterday. These things cut good. Even ran over some scrub trees 2-3” and chopped them up with out missing a beat. Cuts grass and mulches it to a fine mass. I cut right after a rain and it still cut great.

A company named Betsco. I bought the FME -195 commercial mower. 78” cut. Regular price I think was $2800 but on sale for $1450ish with free shipping.
