I tried a hunt last week right after a rain and it was a tough hunt with the wind blowing the rain out of the trees. Hard to hear or see anything. It was a little windy this morning for me, but most weren't cutting anyway. Would catch sight of them timbering or running along the dead hedge trees. Saw 11 and 4 stopped long enough for a head shot.

I spent around 6-7 hours in the woods starting a little past daylight cutting firewood from storm damage this summer. I literally saw/ heard squirrels barking and cutting every time I had my saw or tractor shut off. Around 6:00 this evening,I decided it would be a good evening to finally get after some squirrels. Guess what. Not a creature was stirring! LOL!

Trying a new woods this morning. Unfortunately it’s about a mile walk through neck high CRP and the corn in the adjacent field is still up! I’m only halfway back to the woods and I’m completely drenched from the dew!

Had a fox perched way up a Hickory. Ranged 37 yds. Zeroed in on it. Pummeled to the ground. Spun in the multi flora and I can’t find that dude for the life of me.

There is a tree in one of the woods that I hunt I swear has a black hole under it or something hangs out there and steals squirrels. I have dropped two over the years out of that tree that I have not found. Fell like they were stone dead. When hit with the 17 they fall out dead or in such shock that they just lay there. And it's open ground with very little weeds/growth in that area. They fall just on the other side of a little rise, but you can certainly hear the thump when they hit the ground.

So far, ended up with just one squirrel. And I've had some problems keeping a signal in the woods. Issues with Imgur out here, too. I'll see if this works. As it turned out, the iPhone app shows that it was 1.2 miles on the soppy, clumpy, ankle twisting trek just to get to the woods. I love it out here, but I sure thought I'd have more action. Here's were I stop to take a breather:

Ach! Dunnkopper!!! (That’d be what my ole Mennonite Grandpa say when I did something stupid) I forgot to grab my .22 ammo, so I’m toting the Maverick 88, 20 ga instead! And I just stepped into the woods and their up cuttin’ Hickories like crazy!

Haha! Ain’t even been in these woods for 10 minutes and I just dropped two grays! One was out on a limb cutting away and I would say he was about 30 feet up. Busted him and another ran out the other side just barking at me like crazy! He didn’t bark long! I haven’t even got to the trail cam yet! It is absolutely gorgeous out here. I may just have to take a little jog up to the Northwoods now that I’ve stirred things up here!

Well it’s not live in the woods anymore, but it was earlier. Only could spend a short time and emails started to kick in for an emergency call so I just got in from that. But in less than half hour I ended up with 4 grays. Craziest deal was the last one was on the run. Led him like a runnin’ chukar (done that a few times in the past) and that was the deal. How crazy that one day I sit for maybe 4 or 5 hours and end up with one squirrel. Another day and everything changes with the woods alive with bushytails everywhere! The shotgun was the ticket for me today. Omega...I don’t think I could’ve had that success with .22 headshots!!! Not that good! I don’t know how you do it Bro!

I’ve got the CZ 457 with me this morning. As perfect as it seems weather wise, I’ve not seen a thing, nor heard any cuttin’!

So far I had 1 fox squirrel running on the ground some hundred yards ahead of me. He ended up in the neighbors woods. Dang! What a difference one day to another! Long walk back to the buggy so I’ll see what happens.

Getting ready to go out for my first evening squirrel hunt and help my cousin install his last stand. We'll see if nightime is the right time.

My son killed his first squirrel tonight behind our house. Even fell from the tree with the nut still in its mouth. I helped him with the cleaning, but he did most the work. Hopefully many more to come this season.

Shot three this morning with the .22 Will either fry them up and make gravy with mashed taters and some garden veggies, or debone and make squirrel pot pie. Man, I hate difficult decisions like this.
