I have heard people talk about Warrick County having some wild hogs. I'm not out hunting anymore due to health problems. Getting a heart cath next week. So I can't get out and look around like I did when I was younger. Warrick County has some wild areas and there is a lot of wildlife in this county.
I was talking to a guy who hunts a lot in Warrick County and he said that he had seen wild pigs and that they are definitely here. IDNR is pretty quiet about the locations of any wild hogs in IN. I've read that they are in Lawrence County IN but I don't know for sure. I've seen pictures on some web sites of hogs that look like the Eurasian type here in IN on the internet. But can't tell for sure where they were killed. For all, I know they could have been shot somewhere else and photographed.
A few years ago I got an AR15 for hunting coyotes and it's got a 1:7 twist rate which is good for larger/long 5.56 bullets. I think it would be dangerous to hunt wild hogs. As a kid, I use to read about hunting wild boar in magazines and dreamed of doing it myself. I like adrenaline rushes. LOL But I'm too old and way to slow these days to climb up a tree to escape a wounded and mad boar so I don't think I'll be hunting any of them anytime soon.
When I was younger my dad and I would go down to KY lake and rent a cabin with a fireplace for the week in Dec. I'd go out squirrel hunting and then come back in and sit in the living room reading OUTDOOR LIFE and FIELD AND STREAM magazines. OUTDOOR LIFE always had an article about hunting big cats, bear or wild hogs. Something more dangerous than hunting rabbits would always get me excited to go hunting and shoot something. But I never really go hunting anything much as I didn't have access to the land I needed to hunt wild animals. And we didn't have wild hogs or bears in IN. I heard stories about black panthers (Mountain Lions) around the area where I lived by never saw one.
I lived in the AGR Frat house while at Purdue back in the 1970s and knew a lot of the guys there. Most of the guys living in the ARG house were farmers. A few were from the city and studying agriculture programs at Purdue like Landscape Architecture or Horticulture but didn't live on a farm. Only one time did I ask one of my brothers for permission to go hunting on his land. And that was when Mark Reiter and I were wanting to do some hunting back in 1976. I got permission from one of the brothers that lived up by West Lafayette to hunt his farm. We went there and shot a few squirrels. Then Mark wanted to go visit a guy who raised wild wolves in the area. So we went to the Wolf Sanctuary and gave some dead squirrels to the wolves. I will never forget how the guy could open the gate and go in with those wolves and they treated him like he was family. All tails were wagging and licking the guy in a friendly gesture. But when we got too close to the fence the wolf came out in all of them. The hair on their backs bristled up and they showed their teeth to us and growled fiercely. Scared me to death. I raised German Shepards and they were great dogs for MY family but they would act like a wolf to strangers. So I understood who the wolves could be friendly to their owner (Alpha man) and not to Mark and I. Mark when on to work at IDNR for over 30 years and recently retired from the IDNR F&W directors job. He is still hundreds of miles away and I don't get to visit with him anymore. Time goes so fast and you don't realize how fast it goes until you are older. Wish I had my youth back and could go hunting for Wild Hogs as I think that would be a lot of fun and excitement. But I also know that they can do way too much damage to my brother's farms. So I would not want them here in IN. We don't need exotic wildlife here in IN or anywhere else.
